Improving a paintwork Scratch by hand?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

As mentioned elsewhere , one of next doors kids has managed to put a scratch up both passenger side door panels this week. It's quite deep in places, in spots the clearcoat has visibly been taken off.

With that said, at the time i got out the T-Cut and SRP and managed to clean up quite a bit of it and at least make it a bit less obvious.

Obviously im not a big detailer and these were the only tools in my bag at the time, however i was wondering if anyone had any reccomendations for any other compounds that are good on scratches.

Im not expecting it to remove the scratch, i think that will only be possible with painting, however im just looking for something that will make it a bit less obvious at first glance.

As the thread title suggests i dont have a machine polisher and dont think i would be able to get access to one, so im looking for reccomendations for a compound that i can with my own mits.

Cheers for the help!

Hi Carl,

I do have a machine polisher if it comes to it and you'd like me to have a go with it?

Hello Luke, I'll drop you an e-mail mate :)

TBH the only way around it is to sand it then machine it out. If you do it by hand, I have found in past experince it makes the scratch more obvious.

sand it

g3 wool mop

2 step polish via a machine.

I haven't read your previous posts. If they damaged your car, why are you paying for it?

I've got diddley squat chance of getting them to pay for it methinks.

The mother happened across me when i was washing the car the other day, and when i mentioned the cost of the quote i'd had (£160) all i got was an "Oh dear, well we are very sorry and we have banned him for riding his bike for two weeks" - which i roughly translated to mean "Well, we wont be paying that"

No wonder the kid keeps scratchign people's cars, this is the third one in about 6 months

Oh aye, forgot to mention her comment about "Im sure you could always claim on the house insurance". Did well to hold my tongue at that point.

Anyways, Popped out and got hold of some megs ultimate compound this morning and gave it a bit of elbow grease. Its done a fairly decent job of masking the scratches that are in the clearcoat only, and im sure that with a machine polisher it would probably remove them completely.

The concern, as you will probably see is that there are a couple of scratches and a couple of gouges that look to me to have done down to the primer :(. I'm gonna contact ChipsAway see what they would quote, as im mindful of the possibility of corrosion given the rainy season seems to be here in full swing!

Try scratch x 2.0 - works wonders

Its had some Megs Ultimate, AG SRP & Paint Rennovator and even T-Cut Metallic on it. Although they have cleared up the minor stuff they aint going to touch the worst parts.

Chipsaway fella came around the other day and he said full respray is the only way to go, which tbh i thought was goign to be the outcome. Upon inspection it looks like its gone down to the primer at points, so with winter on the way it looks like im going to have to stump up the readies and get it painted and protected.

Cheers
