Ford to Skoda?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Have been busy trawling through the Superb II section looking for comments & issues. So far only seen the usual problems with DPF's and such like.

Currently driving an S-Max 2.5T Titanium, but new job forces a sale of the car as I'm not allowed a car over 4 years old. Guess what? Yep, car was 4 years old on the 1st of September.

Got a list of possible replacements including the Superb estate. 3 kids & 2 spaniels to ferry around. Also looking to buy a caravan, so diesel power essential. Decided that a 170 PS engine is the answer.

Haven't got around to looking at all the threads yet, but given time I will. In the meantime if anyone has comments on the 170 PS engine, towing and the advantages of manual versus DSG then please point me in the right direction?

The other issue on my mind is tyre wear on a 4 x 4 version. I like the idea of all-wheel drive, but had an issue a few years ago with a V70 AWD and having to get the lease company to change all 4 tyres at the same time.

For my sins I'm currently one of the admins on the S-Max Owner's Club, so yes I'll be using the search facility to its maximum given that we're always telling noobies to do exactly that!

The "competition" at the moment is the A6 Avant [but probably only a 140 PS engine], another S-Max, or a Volvo V60. Wife & some of the kids like the V60 but I'm worried about boot size. Believe it or not the V60 has more back seat space than the V70, but then the latter has a far larger boot. Quite like the idea of a 215 BHP 5-cylinder diesel engine with 122 bhp/tonne, but the Superb [with a 170 PS engine] isn't far behind at 113 BHP/tonne. Just a shame that it's 4-cylinders.

All the best (-:

First of all welcome!

The 170CR is a great engine and you will not be dissapointed with it!

The DPF issues are usually on the older PD engines and don't tend to crop up on the CR's, even on those that do very little mileage (usually if there is a problem with them it is the DPF sensor and not the DPF itself.

Cant say anything about 4x4 and tyre wear but i wouldn't have thought it is too much different to fwd cars to be honest.

Try and get a couple of test drives and enjoy!

Hi and welcome aboard.

.....welcome along, and as jrw says the 170 really is a fine engine...

Can you not keep your S-max and get a private plate fitted... Surely that will hide the age? My neighbour has a 2.0 petrol s max 200bhp titanium. Looks very nice, welcome aboar anyway :)

Heh! Like the private plate idea, but employer has an outside contractor that checks servicing/MOT/insurance etc, so they'll be on to me immediately.

Also need a tow car for wife's desired caravan. The 2.5T is not really the right car. At best I get 30 mpg out of it, so imagine what it would be like towing a 'van!

No, diesel it is for me.

Good to hear that the 170ps engine is good. Can it be remapped even higher?

hello and welcome to the site enjoy

Welcome :)
