DSG noises when changing gears

I have a 1.2 TSI, with a DSG box, and around 6000 km on it (car is 3 months old).

Pretty happy with the engine and DSG, but lately I have noticed some strange sounds from the DSG box. The sound can be heard when driving at slow speeds (around town) and windows are down. There are a few "clanks" heard when I declerate, and then accelerate (like when getting into a roundabout). When I accelerate there is a small clank heard, and it jumps forward. Also, when driving slowly, and DSG either goes up from 2nd to 3rd gear, or down to 3rd from 4th gear, it seem like it has a hard time getting the 3rd gear in, which is accompanied by a "rattle" noise. Not exactly like griding gears on a manual, but something a bit more subtle.

Is this normal? I've been pretty gentle on the DSG, but maybe there is some sort of failure?

When accelarating at normal speeds (not slowing down in the middle) all gears shift without noise (at least not that I heard). The problem is at slow speeds.

Any ideas? Do I need to go to the dealer for service/check?

Yes, I'd say back to the dealer. Doesn't sound right to me!

Thats what I thought too, but yesterday, when I was walking on the street, I saw a VW Polo TSI comming about a roundabout, and it made the exactly same noises I get with my Octy. I was surprised that I heard it from a few meters away, but I definitely heard it!

Although the Polo I saw might also have a problem with its DSG, but I doubt it. It calmed me down a bit, but thats still strange behavoiur in my opinion.

BTW, what happens in the DSG when its put in Neutral? Safety issues aside, Is it OK to go downhill when the DSG is in Neutral? What I mean is, is it like Neutral in a manual box, or like in an automatic (which from what I heard is not recommended to be put in neutral while driving because it can overheat).

I'd still get it looked at for your piece of mind.

You shouldn't have it in neutral when moving. It should always be in drive. I only pop it into neutral if I am stationary at lights for more than a few moments.

My 7 speed DSG is absolutely smooth and seamless. It makes no clanks and is almost silent in operaton except under hard acceleration in lower gears it makes a short soft whistling sound like "peeeeooooooo" as it changes up. I guess it is the shaft/gears continuing to spin briefly after the load is released when drive is switched between shafts.

My DSG6 does, and always has, made a few clunk-type noises as gears engage- but nothing very loud. I notice, well, because I'm interested in the mecahnics of it all. I've had it since 20k miles, it now has 60k and still is fine. Get it checked before end of warranty if you like, but otherwise, stop worrying.

I think it just disengages both clutches. I think the manual warns not to coast in N. As you say, it's the same for most autos- presumably because if the engine is at idle so is the transmission oil pump.

my 2.0 2006 dsg also makes gear noises,when stopping at traffic lights ore slowing down to stop.i think it is normal for this,unless someone else knows different? mileage 76.000.

with the 6-dsg, u need to 'press the foot-brake' (brakes) to put the car from neutral back into to drive. i'm not sure if the 7-dsg has the same 'feature'.

so if u got to the bottom of the downhill while in neutral, and had to keep going - u won't be able to as u'll have to to press the brakes (possibly come to a stop first??), re-engage drive, and then continue!!

its an annoying feature especially when u put the car into neutral while at the lights and leg off the brake pedal. u just want to be able to flick it back into drive and move off....but u can't.....till u press the brake pedal....flick...then drive off!

i haven't tried the other way either, while moving saying at the top of a downhill, to put the car into neutral from drive. won't b surprised if u have to press the brakes to do so, or have the car stationary!!

Yes, the DSG7 acts the same way. When stationary, I've got used to changing back to D. I just press the brakes lightly (no need to come to a stop, i.e. when going downhill) and then move to D.

I think I'll have the DSG checked next week. Thanks for the help.

I'm still wondering about the Neutral. Even if the manual says not to coast when in Neutral, it might be a safety recommendation, and not something technical. Anyone have a solid opinion on this based on technical knowledge?

DSG6 is the same. At standstill, you need footbrake, above a few MPH it will just drop in to D.
