File structure for mp3s on SD card

Featured Replies

Hi,

the Bolero? player in my 2009 Octavia Eligance has a slot for a SD card. I seem to remember reading that the player will only recognise a certain number of files.

Can any one advise or point me to adivice on loading MP3s on to the card - should I put them on as individual albums/files or should I not use a file structure and load 100's of individual tracks as one file?

Thanks in anticipation

G

Each track is a file... an MP3 or WMA etc.

I think you are really asking what the folder structure should be maybe?

If you just load 100s of tracks into one folder it will be very difficult to find anything and select on the Bolero screen. Fine if you just want to play through the whole lot but not if you decide you'd like to listen to Motorhead one day and Mozart the next.

I originally loaded mine as a folder for each artist containing folders for each album containing the appropriate tracks. (This is the same structure Windows has by default for files ripped from CDs)

If you've a lot of music you may like to have your highest layer of folders named A, B, C etc and load the appropriate artist folders into each of them. This makes navigation/selection a lot easier and safer whilst driving. That's what I have now.

Hope that makes sense.

One thing I found is that tracks within a folder will be played in alphabetical filename order rather than in track order. If they are named "01_track_name" or something similar you'll be fine otherwise you may need to use some tagging software to sort out (if you feel the need).

Another tip if you are ripping CDs to WMAs in Windows Media Player make sure the DRM box is unchecked. If DRM (Digital Rights Management)is checked and applied the Bolero won't play them. I paid my stepson to rip 500 CDs only to find he had applied DRM.....

The file limitation is approximately 2000 files apparently. I can confirm from personal experience that if you load up a 32GB SD card with 500+ CDs worth of music you won't be able to see it all. In my A-Z folders I think I can only see down to "F"

That's how I got into an MDI retrofit but that's another story (already documented on here!)

Try this, It formats your mp3's in the write structure.

Thanks for your replies chaps.

So, if I created main folders for Blues, Classical, Folk, Rock, etc. Then put sub folders below these with, say, artists names, the below those individual albums - would that structure work?

Yes

Yep, thats how i did mine, got loads of comedy stuff on mine too, so had files for Comedy, 80's, rock, modern etc and then files within those for artists, and files within those for different albums by said artist.

Hi Guys

not sure if this is right place to post this but....

I picked up a new Octy VRS last week with a columbus sat nav fitted (mainly for mp3s  )

Only gripe with it at the moment is the mix function doesnt seem to work over the whole HDD. If i turn it on, it just mixes the folder its in.

I originally tried having artist -> album -> songs and it didnt work. im trying just albums on the root of the HDD now to see if that works better, but does anyone have any better suggestions?

I do like having my music randomised for a bit of everything :)

Thanks

Ian

I use a program called MediaMonkey for ripping, managing and syncing mp3s to devices, SD Cards and Hard Drives.

Can't recommend it highly enough as it works with ipods etc as well.

You can change the structure it writes to the card quite easily, create playlists and sync them across etc.

Oh, and I have a Bolero for sale in the classifieds section emoticon-0148-yes.gif
