Watch this space

Featured Replies

As anyone who has read my stuff on here in the past will know, my Superb has been (and still is) riddled with niggling little faults; rattles, clicks and so on. I've lived with them for a while now but I lost the plot last week and decided I couldn't get along with the ignorance any longer. I simply have to know what these noises are.

In no particular order I'll now list the present problems and perhaps in a fortnights time I'll update the thread with the Garage's findings. Hopefully this thread will be of some assistance to other Superb owners with similar bothers.

A clicking and/or knocking sound when turning the car at any real speed. The noise seems louder the more force there is in the manoeuvre or turn; e.g. third exit from a roundabout (a small, sharp one) will have it quite loud. Very evident, very irritating and now seemingly omnipresent as I hear a jarring when making even a slight steering adjustment at higher speeds. The pitch of the noise... Or perhaps just where I sense it to be emanating from makes me suspect whatever makes the click/knock is also giving out this (new) very low sort of jarring/rattling. Everyone I've asked or consulted about it suspects a CV joint to be on its way out however I've had both changed and the noise hasn't ceased. In fact it's recently worsened (the jarring, and louder when cornering). I can't isolate it to a particular side of the car. It just sounds as though it's related to steering and comes from underneath bonnet.

My engine revs at idle. Not all the time. In fact quite rarely. But it does do it. Watch this space...

My cabin still condensates awfully quickly, despite having a leak fixed in the summer there. That included resealing the pollen filter and a whole host of other things to prevent moisture ingress. If I sit in the car for five minutes sometimes (after turning the engine off) the side windows will have steamed up inside. It does depend on the weather to some extent yes, it'd have to be cold outside. But the problem it gave me last winter was one of having to scrape inside and outside the car all the time. A real, real nuisance.

I had my spring changed a while back (passenger side). That now creeks when pulling away with the pressure on that side of the car. (Sigh).

My turbo whistles or squeals quite loudly. Not all the time... Sometimes it doesn't at all, actually. It's functional... It just gives out a rather irritating noise from time to time.

My A/C fan runs on constantly, regardless of the A/C being on or off. I say constantly, sometimes it doesn't. But most of the time it does. And my A/C functionality is impaired in one respect; If I set it to A/C (not blower) sometimes I'll get blower. Quite often actually. And it works the other way about as well I'm sure...

I've recently had the tyres changed (all four) and since then the car's slowing down has developed a more ostensible sound; a sort of dying, slowing woosh when loosing velocity. I'm sure when I listen intently I can also hear something on the passenger side oscillating or rotating loosely when coming to a halt. This isn't strictly under breaking by the way, just pure loss of speed.

I've a bulb light up on my dash but they reckon that's just one on its way out as the warning is intermittent.

Due in for the investigative work next Tuesday. I'll update after then.

Right... Here it is.

The omnipresent noise which was once thought to be a CV joint on its way out was in fact the result of worn gearbox mounts on both sides of my car. They've been replaced... At a cost! (£234.24).

The garage also uncovered some alarming but unsurprising suspension wear. I had noticed a deterioration in the ride quality, actually. I was reluctant to mention because I thought I might've came across as a hypochondriac of sorts! Even with the bad pot holes and so on, it was becoming a bit of a bone shaker. Cabin noise increasing, really feeling the road (not in a pleasing way). This has militated the need for replacement suspension arms, mounts and drop links at a cost of £546.79. I believe this was just the lower parts of the suspension... The garage recommended both upper suspension arms to be replaced at a cost of £510.55 but I simply was reluctant to go for that as the play is slight and I was told it wasn't as bad as what the lower stuff was.

The creaking is allegedly a dashboard issue. Something to do with clips. I'm just going to leave that as £200 for an indefinite cure for a benign and rarely present noise doesn't represent value in my opinion.

The engine idling and A/C problems relate to the temperature coolant sensor which I've had replaced in the past but not properly, so I'm told.

The rest isn't an issue, it's just benign. Tyre noise and so on. Nothing to worry about, including the turbo.

The other thing is that the rear engine under-tray is missing and the front one is cracked, so I'm told. I didn't go for the replacements at three hundred odd pounds. Again I just can't shell out that kind of money at present.

That's really the size of it all. I implore your comment and advice. Oh, and where cheapest to get a driver's side headlamp? That I'd really love to know. Also. Discs and pads; what sort of price? And...! Those suspensions arms they quoted me five hundred for... Possible to do cheaper?
