Fuel Tank Blow Back

I have not been on here for a fair while, but back in time I posted about this problem, 2006, on what was a new Octavia station wagon, which not allow me to fill the tank without getting constant blow backs. I went backward and forwards to my local dealer and then the problem seemed to be solved, but from time to time the same problem comes back only to suddenly go away again with visible reason as to why or how. Now it has again come back and if I have anymore fuel than a quarter of a tank I get fuel blow back no matter how slow I try to put the fuel, diesel, into the tank and it takes so long the forecourt diesel pump times out. When you get to the last quarter of a tank you can then happily fill the tank at full bore with no sign of any blow back.

Yes. Insert nozzle rotate ~90° clockwise full bore filling much improved. A pragmatic solution.Same thing happened with my Passat diesel.

I have tried turning that nozzle in umpteen various positions, but to no avail and as I have said get down to a quarter of a tank and you can happily pump in the diesel at full bore. The other strange thing about this problem is that it comes and goes, the vehicle is now five years old and in some of those years I have had no refuelling problems. There is no point in asking Skoda as they deny anything that is put to them, remember the faulty Bosch aerial saga a world wide VAG problem, which Skoda seemed never to have heard about.

I know how you feel. (2.0 TDI Octavia Estate).

I always get problems at my local Tesco and usually avoid it like the plague. But I had to go there earlier this week as I was running really low and I managed a record...I could only get £2.48 of diesel into the car and then the "blow back" was such that I could not add any more no matter what I did. Complained at the checkout kiosk (again!) but they looked at me like I'm stupid and go through all the "twist the nozzle through 180 degrees....." palaver. I've been here before - its a dialogue with the deaf. So I do what I should have done in the first place and crawl to Sainsburys. Got £57 into the vcar without any problem.

I'm not saying that Sainsbury is necessarily better than Tesco but in my area the Tesco pumps are really ancient, and the ones at Sainsbury are nearly new. The same goes for my local independent retailer. Brand new pumps and never a problem with them.

I've never seen an answer to this probelm but suspect that some pumps are just more sensitive than others.

There's no problem with the Ventectomy for a diesel. The vent is left from the petrol engines that require "Evaporative Emissions Systems". Since a diesel does not require this system, removing the "Vent" allows for the full capacity of the tank to be utilized allowing you to fit an additional 2-3 gallons into the standard tank. The vent also helps to settle the fuel during fill-up, allowing for a quicker filling of the tank.

It's petrol vehicles that can potentially suffer problems when this change is done, as petrol is more volatile and may need to actually expand into the expansion part of the tank, for which the ventectomy automatically fills; depending on the climatic conditions and how much fuel you're adding of course.

With the original issue here - I'm supposing that this issue happens no matter which forecourt you try? As mentioned already, I've had issues with some retailers- usually the supermarkets. I use Shell whereever possible, and never had a problem with any of their pumps.

It does not seem to matter where I get the fuel although I find Tesco fuel is very frothy compared with Sainsbury or Waitrose, which I tend to use as they are far cheaper than most. It seems to be the tank fuel level plays the important part as once I get below a quarter tank even the Tesco fuel goes in without any problem.

I will have a look at the above posted links to see about the tank vent. I would like to get this thing sorted once and for all.
