Nothing wrong with mine, its great, but I thought id do a set of checks - oil, water etc etc just to be sure.

Fluids were all fine, but the tyre pressures were interesting. As some of you know, I am a bit focused on fuel economy and correct tyre pressures are important to achieve anywhere near claimed figures. What surprised me was the range of recommended pressures for the MC with 17" wheels.

The range was 33psi for light load up to 44psi for full passenger/luggage. 11psi is quite a difference. I checked all my tyres and they were all different, ranging from 29psi to 31psi. I have now topped them all up and am going to experiment a bit with different pressure over the next few fill ups. My starting gambit is right in the middle of the range - all four at 38psi.

Car feels fine, and now they are all even the slight pull to the left I had now has been eradicated.

The only other minor thing is when I turn off I get a warning on the Maxidot to 'Check Deadlocks in Owners Manual' but cant find this in any section. Any ideas?

'Check Deadlocks in Owners Manual'

i've googled this and its normal, its on here somewhere ;)

I thought the best psi for the fabia was 2.5 bar or 36 psi, both fabia's now on 2.5 bar pressure, but economically the psi wants to be in the 38/40 psi but tends to be a little to firm

A little warning. Raising the tyre pressures by more than about 2 psi can make the car very skittish on wet roads. It's worth doing a test run somewhere quiet on a wet day just to see but be VERY careful.

Also, you may find that the tyres are wearing badly. By this I mean that rubber is being removed faster generally and that the wear rate is most around the centre strip of the tread. These problems are caused because the higher pressure is making the tread cross section more domed so that the load on the rubber is concentrated there and less on the edges of the tread.

If you save fuel by having the tyres harder, you may pay for it when the tyres need replacing.

If you want to run the tyres harder than normal, get a good tread depth gauge and keep a monthly record of the depth of tread at about 4 points on each tyre (by the valve, centre and edge and opposite the valve likewise).

Finally, if you have an accident and the insurer or cops check the tyre pressures, there may be problems if they are not set to the specified pressure.

But mine are in the specified pressure range, smack in the middle so no legal problems
