I've got a Octavia 2 2.0 DSG on order and as is the habit, have perused around other manufacturers sites to see how the performance of the engines/cars compare.

I was somewhat surpised to find that just about every other manufacturers diesels seem to offer better performance :eek:

Vaxhaul, Jaguar, Ford all seem to have comparibale sized engines with 0-60 times below 9 seconds. Am I missing something? I know the new VW engine is Euro IV compliant, is this the reason?

I need reasurance that I wont get trounced and the lights by every other diesel on the road unless it's a tractor :(

Forget 0-60 for it means nothing

Tis true - 0-60 is for max power readers. The mid range is obscene on the fabia's hence the reason i am changing my <6 seconds 0-60 Volvo T5 for one, among other reasons

I wish Skoda would publish the mid-range figures for their engines. I've seen some for the 1.6 FSi somewhere, but nothing for the 2.0 TDi. Anyone got the numbers to compare to other manufacturers?

Autocar does for their tests, but in 20mph increments and for a number of gears, eg Octavia vRS - 50-70 - 9.1 (5th), 6.1 (4th), 4.6 (3rd), 3.9 (2nd).

How about 4th gear 60 - 100 in 13.7 seconds, same speeds in 5th 15.2

forget 0-60. 2nd gear runs out at 48mph. You might find that some of the quicker ones will do 60 in second but have a less well spaced gearbox as a result.

I agree with the other posts, don't worry about the 0-60 times, its on the road that counts, and i guarantee you wont be disappointed with the 2.0 Pd! I love it. The mid range urge is simply stunning, as other owners of the 2.0 will hopefully agree

IIRC from a meeting with a Fabia vRS, it's the other way round..........

My VW Pastie 130 TDI PD sounds like a tractor at any speed, both inside and out.

Though it is CONSIDERABLY faster when the turbo works (unlike sunday)

If I,m honest, my reaction is "so what about the specs and other makers engines". If you only want a traffic light sprinter, then go so something more suitable.

If you want a good all round car, the Octy is fine.

Some times for the Octavia 2.0 diesel from magazines are:

Autocar 40-60 in 5.0s (4th), 50-70 in 8.2s (5th)

What Car 50 -70 in 6.0s (4th), 50-70 in 7.5s (5th)

The DSG in the golf improved the figures over the standard gear box but in the Audi A3 they were a little worse. The overall opinion is teh DSG will speed changing gear and improve times.

My 2.0 tdi is noticeably louder than my colleagues 2.0d X3. I think it's the difference between VAG's PD technology and everyone elses Common Rail engines. Common rail used to be quieter but less powerful, but now they seem to be quieter and MORE powerful.

Common rail has a precombustion squirt to reduce noise and clatter.

Also comparing and X3 2.0 to an Octy 2.0 is a tad unfair considering the difference in retail values, not forgetting that BMW have probably some of the quietest diesels on the market and always have.

Noise at idle and low speed, as that's when i hear it mostly. It was still clattery but not as thunderous as the VAG engine.

I do think it's a fair comparison as the 2.0 VAG engine is used in the A4 which is a direct 3 series competitor.

A fair question. In a What Car test including 105 PD TDI Octy II and Golf V the Octy's engine was described as "raucous" but that in the Golf was deemed OK. I've come across reports of exceptionally noisy TDIs in VWs. I guess there must be a few bad'uns about. I've never found any of the VAG 1.9 TDIs offensively noisy and my first back in 1992 (90bhp/134lbft) had no acoustic hood. They didn't arrive 'til 93 or 94.

Having owned a PD powerd VW for more than 140,000 miles I can tell you that the Skoda is noisier on the engine front. I can also tell you that the insulation layer on the bulkhead is a lot less, the underbonnet padding is virtually non existent and the engine bay is far from water tight, never mind soundproof.

I was appalled at the amount of road water getting into the engine bay on my Octy. The Bora would collect all sorts of rubbish around the bonnet edge but water only got in from a fe very small places. The whole front edge of the Skoda is open without sealing.

I know this is one of the reasons for the price difference. It's also the reason that our Skodas are noiser... not the engines, just the unsulation.

The 2.0TDI goes slower than very few cars I've owned

Honda CRX (perfect in every way engine wise),

Lancia Integrale8v(tdi has better Throttle response Similar grunt low down but less top end!!!!),

Primera eGT (TDi has similar throttle response much more grunt)

2X Impreza turbos (TDi not quite so thrashtastic ),

307 Dturbo 110 ( was quiet and refined but felt soft and treakly, where the Skud is louder but rortier in a nice way . Remember the sound of a BDA Escort ? praps going too far but sporty none the less)

I have the 1.9 TDI. For normal driving with the radio on I don't hear the engine but tyre noise can become quite intrusive on some road surfaces including stretches of motorway.

In my youth I fitted sound deadeneing kits to my Minis. Can one still get such kits?

Sound deadening materials are still available - as to whether they sell them in any kind of "kit" form, I'm not sure...

I don't know how effective these would be against road noise, and whether some different tyres might a more pronounced difference. I do know what you mean about certain stretches of motorways, my Octy is horrendously rumbly on concrete surfaces...
