MTM we quite happy to tune mine up to 180 PS despite the auto box. Should take it no probs. If yours is the 155 PS version, torque will go from 310 to 340 Nm. With the 163PS version it goes from whatever Nm to 390Nm, a much bigger gain, but the basic car (163) already peaks torque at 1250 rpm, so already very driveable and strong and smooth, and in my opinion only worth tuning if you want to explore the 120mph++ range, which is suicidal in this country, but obviously if you are going abroad a different story.

what about MPG ?

did you notice any better

because I'm using it every day and not sure if i should go for 1.9 or tune and refine this one ?

More power = you will use it, so forget about fuel savings! If you are mpg conscious buy the 1.9 tdi lump, uses much less fuel in the city. But the faster you go the smaller the difference. At very high speeds the 2.5 can actually be more economical. I get 37 to 41 mpg at some very very high speeds (in Germany). Doubt the 1.9 would beat that.

i had 1.9

and at 100mph through Germany i had 40mpg

but i had enuf of 4 cylinder clunking noise

I get around 24mpg at 135mph - 145mph :D

And having driven 1.9 over the same autobahn routes as 2.5, I agree, 2.5 wins every day above 2500rpm. Actually, it wins also below 1800rpm.

Regarding the chip, safest bet would be a chip with not very much torque increase but a lot of power increase. Peak torque is at low rpm and this is where you can break the gearbox/slip clutch. Increasing peak power for these diesels means keeping torque constant up to high rpm, normally torque tails off from 2k rpm onwards. But this kind of chip does not increase fuel economy, just the top power and speed B)

There are very few companies doing this as most just resell someone else's software. Find their websites and ask at source. I did, and although in the end I have what I wanted, I'd use a different chip next time.

My best advice if you want fuel economy is to stay in tiptronic mode, select high gear and sail around at 1000rpm-1400rpm. 1.9tdi cannot do it, 2.5tdi actually sounds happy doing it. Most of time around town I stay in 4th, and I definitely could use longer 6th on motorway.

Exactly.

Just remember that if you have the 155PS V6 version you will still have 275 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm, and 290 Nm if you have the 163 PS version. This is not significantly less than the torque peak of 310 Nm@2000rpm (155PS) or 340 Nm @ 1250rpm (163 PS). Compare that to 230Nm at 4000rpm with the 1.9 tdi, and that's the reason why once you have done some Autobahn miles in both, you realise the superiority of the V6. And I also agree the V6 sounds lovely at low revs, you can drive it all day without going above 1500 rpm.

If you can put aside the sheer inefficiency of the V6 (compare the road tax ratings with the 1.9) it's a real tragedy that VAG used the same gearbox with the same ratios.

If you're prepared to pay for the output of the V6, a higher top gear would make all the difference and might make it worth having. If you live in the UK with a 70/80 mph. max speed you might just as well use a 1.9 which is far more reliable (no VP44), costs less to maintain (price a belt change on a V6) and is much more efficient. The extra nose weight of the V6 does not help the lousy handling of the B5.5.

Each to his own, but the V6 is stone age diesel technology and the CO2 output proves it.

rotodiesel.

Thanks guys

the closer to the due day of my twins the more i think of getting of selling my v6 and getting the 1.9

Its not what i wish for but its better economy which means better for family budget

..

I have to say that seens i got the v6 i have cleaned full intake manifold and modded the air box to here more roar-noise and full DE-CAT done on it and its still don't smoke as much as others do just abit of hayse on full power

so v6.....yes, love it, smooth and not slow

1.9........ smokes on full power and usual 4 in line noise but great economy

...

Not sure what to do just

...

For now will change oil and filter in auto-box

REMEMBER: use VAG specific oil - not Dextron spec.

The drain and fill is a specialist job - it is not just a matter of draining and filling up.

You need special tools. And even plugging in a laptop!

Also change the filter while at it.

It's to set the oil level in the box. It has to be brought up to a certain temperature, and as the fluid expands with temperature the level has to be set at the correct temperature. This is what I have been told. Furthermore, the filler is on top of the gearbox and only really accessible from underneath, for which you need a "pump" to push the fresh oil up. You cannot just pour it in. So you either need to be clever and buy a suitable pump and pipework or just get someone experienced to do it for you.

Cost is about £100 for parts and £100 for labour, so not too bad.

Hi

I have had my 2.5 TDi remapped to 205 BHP with a 45% torque increase on an engine/auto tiptronic gearbox for the last 2 years. The car had done 106000 miles when it was done and is now at 123500. Absolutely no problems. The engine oil/filter is changed every 10K and I had the auto gearbox oil drained and relpaced when it was remapped, and I will do it again soon. That was done by a mobile company in Ross-on-Wye, well worth the 600 mile round trip, it can be done in or out of the vehicle and cost me £100. (I did my x3 Skodas for £300!! Drove x1 car and took the other x2 car ECU's to do on the bench)

You will not get as good mpg around town 30-35mpg but on a run up to 55mpg. (It gets better the faster you go, up to 120, then goes down again, awesome)

The accelleration is 0-60 in 8 sec or less, but there is a downside as front tyres don't last as long, 8-10K is all I get.

The car is now one of the best cars I have ever owned and the top speed is awesome due to the massive touque increase.

Lastly using the tiptronic as a manual shift it will go into top at 38 mph and 1200 rpm and then pull like a train to well double illegal speed and more,I also use it to tow a caravan, which it does with absolute ease.

Hope this helps

The oil is by the litre around £8, VAG spec ONLY. Get a dealer to do it as is not straightforward and they have the correct tools.

It is impossible to get all the oil out, they can only replace 5-6 litres, but it is well worth it if you are on or over 100K.

The total cost for mine to be done was £100 inc VAT and oil. Don't get a backstreet guy to do it as it is just not worth the risk.

Hope this helps

yes thanks for all info

my V6 TDi is on 88k and just changed engine oil + oil filter

so sometime in the next few months will change auto-box oil

Can you remember the name of the company that did the work for you? Sounds like a very good deal to me.

Thanks.

Hold on, are we saying a remap for £100?

Technically, there is not much to it, as long as you are copying a reputable set of maps

So some charge £300, some charge £100. But I have never come across a 205 PS map for the V6. Assuming it still peaks at 4000 rpm, that's 362 Nm at 4000 rpm! God knows what it is at lower speeds!

  • 4 weeks later...

I had my Edition 100 V6 auto remapped by Performance Torque in Wolverhampton about 2 years ago. The rolling road recorded 157bhp, 6 under what is should have been. That went up to 187 after the map. Torque went from around 234 to 285lb/ft. I fitted a K&N after the remap which made the engine feel less restrained and seemed to make the gearbox happier too.

Around town I don't see any difference in mpg at about 34. On a run I get around 42 and as someone said earlier, the faster you go, the better the mpg. I've not had any issues with gearbox reliability.

The only thing I don't like about the car, and the 2 V6 TDi Passats I ran from 2001 to 2007, is the auto box. Compared to an XF 2.7d I drove a few weeks ago it is prehistoric. That said, I walked away from the XF that I was thinking of swapping the Superb for. Why? I didn't think that for £12k plus my 45k miler I was getting any more in terms of style or features but most of all, the XF didn't feel as quick. £12k outlay is a lot to pay just to get a better gearbox.

Right now, I don't want to pay the £20k+ for a 3L XF-S which will, I think, give me the performance I want. As usual with a used car, Skoda or any other, it's worth more than the trade in value and that's doubly the case with my Edition 100. I had a Parrott fitted and the guys in work put an aux input in for me a couple of years ago. Since I've decided to keep it for a while longer I've put some new rear tyres on (Dunlop Sport Maxx), the aircon has just been serviced, a polish has brought it up like new and there's just a valet of the inside to complete.

Its difficult to think what you could buy for £6k trade in, £8k retail that would match my Superb which, at 45k, has only just started getting into it's stride.
