2.0 CR engines, how to tell?

Featured Replies

I know this is a much covered topic but I looking at replacing my MK1 Superb 1.9TDi for a MK2, I need the power of the 2.0 diesel to pull my caravan and know that the 2.0 PD diesel is to avoided like the plague, My question is did they fit any PD engines to the MK2 or are they all CR engines, is there a way to tell between the two?

The reason why I ask is i've seen a couple I like on autotrader but this bit of info is missing of both adverts,

Cheers

Hi Bryanp,

If not mistaken, if you go for the estate then they are all CR engines. Not sure about the "twin door".

The 170 has both letters on the boot in Red.... ie. TD are coloured red for the 170ps. & only the T is red on the 140ps.

I suspect the PD engine is all silver but not totally sure.

The service book should state the details - as would the V5 document.

I hope although not a perfect answer, it helps

Regards

Stef

They produced the PD140 up until around May 2010, after then they are all CR engines

The 170 is badges TDi (Chrome T, red Di)

The 140 is badged TDi (Chrome TD, red i)

One of the easiest ways to tell them apart is to listen to them, you know what a PD sounds like, well a CR is almost as quiet as a petrol engine.

If a petrol engine of mine sounded like my 170 cr it would be straight into the garage! ;) ;)

hehe, Well spotted Gizmo.... it was a test obviously!

Why avoid the PD140, there are no issues with this engine in the MK2 superb, it shares nothing in common with the dodgy 2.0PD engine used in the MK1. The PD140 2.0 in mine has been faultless, its even remapped and is just as quiet in the Superb as the CR engine.

The 170BHP engine has always been CR.

Think he must be referring to DPF issues with the PD.

As has been said plus the CR redlines at 5k and not 4.5 and it really does sound almost as quiet as a petrol.

Sorry but there is a big difference in engine noise between a PD and CR, (and I love the way a PD drives compared to a CR!)

The engine noise may not be obtrusive whilst you are driving, and if you have never owned a CR you may not even think it's an issue - I certainly didn't in my MKI PD130 Superb, but the CR is definitely a lot quieter.
