Turbo upgrade, how much?

Featured Replies

A basic search is throwing up a lot of info but it's all pretty confusing, so it's easier just to ask.

I'm currently stage 1 on a standard turbo and wondering how much it would cost to get to the 190-200 bhp mark? I'm not too fussed about changing the intercooler just yet (got to keep the cost down due to being married, etc).

Would a reconditioned PD150 get me more power or is a hybrid essential? Not too interested in labour costs atm as I know someone with a garage who I could ask a favour from.

Real-ish figures...

Standard turbo runs to 170 +/-5hp

PD150 or 160 turbo (Garrett GT1749vb) say 190 +/-5hp

People on SCN have run the 150 turbo with an otherwise standard "PD130" setup. As a road car for an occasional prod it can work well. Ultimately, keeping the hoof down it'll overload the standard intercooler. If keeping the cost down, get any remap limited on torque if changing the turbo or you'll be budgetting for a clutch or clutch/flywheel setup soon.

Yeah that helps, thanks.

So what approx cost would a reconditoned PD150 or 160 go for? I've been doing some searches and keep finding thread after thread on various forums, but cant find one for sale. Just wondering what cost others have paid I guess..

Brand new PD150 turbo from turbo centre uk is about £450 mate

Thats well cheap!

Wow - didnt realise they were that cheap ! I'll be buying 2 of them! No i'm not being stupid - one for the Touran and one for the VRS!

that sound to cheep! is it a recon?

They require your turbo in return and think its plus postage

But they'll accept a 130 in exchange?

Whats better a Fabia one Hybrid or a Pd150 Turbo?

Adam

Did anyone get a turbo from turbo center uk? I called them and they seemed right enough but just wanted get some feedback before handing over my cash to them.

But they'll accept a 130 in exchange?

So he said mate :)

I know of a couple of guys on here that have used them and recommended them

I said to Chris that I'm going to wait until the New Year when most companies are more willing to offer a discount. Maybe it's worth approaching them for a group buy?

Cant see that happening when you are getting a brand new PD150 turbo for 450 sheets, but i guess theres no harm in asking.

PD150 is a good turbo but has more lag than the 130 obviously which can be annoying sometimes, after driving with a 130 turbo. im thinking of going the hybrid route with my 150 as all you really need engine wise is an intercooler to suit it. the standard clutch can still be run with the appropriate amount of torque and a nice friendly gradual torque curve. If i were you mate id go 150 hybrid as then you have the choice to map it for a lower power if you like, or full wake at a later date. you could do this after buying that one for £450 or get a cheap one off ebay with milage on it and get it hybridised (<-- never been a word)

Cost is my only issue, although I have no idea how much a hybrid(ised :p ) turbo costs?

£890 iirc for pd150h

£890 iirc for pd150h

Is that a case of supply them with a turbo or do they supply and hybrid a 150 turbo?

when i phoned the usual turbo places it was looking at about £500/£600 if you provide your turbo which i think is quite good :)

Not 100% as I haven't gone down that route yet but I think its £890 and your turbo... not sure tho

That for a PD150 hybrid? If so, where from??? Lol.

Turbo centre uk gave me a price of £760 delivered for a PD150 hybrid plus your turbo back to them

this was from like cr turbo's i think as well as some other places that gave the same kind of price, although whether that was VAT inclusive or not would be a different matter, i suspect not with the prices you guys are finding. That was with providing a 150 turbo for either swapping with their pre hybridised 150 or to do the work to convert the one you gave them, how ever they do it :)

So its fair to say a hybrid starts to get a bit pricey.

IMO its alot of bang for your buck so to speak
