strange vibration when driving on M-Way

Featured Replies

Hey all,

well its a hard 1 to explaing so bare with me, when im driving 70mph+ on the motorway i feel this vibration through the steering wheel every 2ish secs, its like i go over a smooth then rough part of road but every 2 secs without fail. ive had a solid flywheel conversion if that could be the prob but im just grasping @ straws, i think its related to the revolution @ this speed, if anyone can help please reply as its driving me mad.

thanks Marc :)

Check front wheel balance first. If each wheel is a little out of balance, the errors will alternately cancel and add due to the slightly differing rolling radii.

Thanks for the reply, I've had cars when the balance is out & it's a constant shake but this isn't even though it's @ the balance shake speed, so can you get a balance shake that is about 1-2 secs constantly apart? I've never in all my driven years felt this before.

It depends. The front wheels are linked by the steering rack/trackrods, so any shake will be transferred from one side to the other.

I have met cases of alternately cancelling and adding vibration due to the rolling radii being slightly different. Check the wheel balance first.

Thanks roto will do :) I need some new tyres anyway on the front, when it's done & give it a drive & give you a report.

I'd agree with Roto that this is a certain possibility - and it's the cheapest fix too. I've had similar symptoms once, many years ago - got this slight thrumming vibration every 2 or 3 seconds when blasting down the motorway. Didn't effect the steering wheel, I could just feel the vibration through my feet, but it cleared as soon as the speed dropped a bit. Turned out to be the tread of a remould on the rear axle starting to come away! Scary :whew:

I had this some time back and it was caused by a siezed front brake caliper.

I have an infrared temp probe and the "good" disk was 45°c and the bad..........285°c. So if you haven't got any thing like that to measure it with, just put your hand NEAR to disk/wheel and see if there is a marked difference in heat coming from them. DO NOT TOUCH THE DISKS JUST IN CASE!

The vibration was caused by the disk warping.

Well I still haven't sorted the problem as I've had to much work on, but I think it could be down to the front passenger wheel or tyre, it has a very slow puncture & I've noticed the side wall has some cracking, I will get a new tyre, tracking & balance done as it could be that which is the problem, it seams to be when I hit 60mph +. Thanks for the replies :)

Try new drop links as a cheap fix.
