Fabia struggles to start

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am completely new to Skodas, and my recently purchased Skoda Fabia 1.2 (2008 24,000M) seems to have an intermitent problem where it struggles to start (usually in the afternoons, never in the mornings) where the car starts, but then either cuts out or runs at low revs and only properly gets going when I put my foot down on the accelerator.

I hear these things are quite common, and my local garage has agreed to clean out the throttle 'thingy' and replace the temperature sensor all for £100.

They didn't reallly know how to fix it, and nothing showed up on the diagnostics.

Does this all sound right?

Cheers

possibly crank position (TDC) sensor, i know renaults are notorious for intermittent starting probelms where the TDC sensor gets dirty and fails

Flatcat, no it's not that common. The 1.2 engine is very reliable. It sounds like it could be the throttle position sensor is going out to lunch. This can sometimes cause an intermittent fault like you describe, or it could be a coil pack needs replacing. Both of these things can show up like you describe and won't show a fault code necessarily. Let your garage replace the items you mention in your post, it could easily be one of those. If not, the path above could be the way to go.

I have to agree with estate man, leaning more towards it being a coil pack but it's most certainly not a characteristic of the engine.

Thanks for the advice, guys!

It's going in on tuesday, so we shall see, but most annoyingly the car has been absolutely fine, no problems at all after I booked it in. Typical.

If it still plays up, I shall go down the coil pack route

Thanks again

Hello!

I have same kind of problem in my Fabia 1.4 16V (2010). Problem occurs time to time in the afternoon when it's hot (> +20), never in the morning, and it may require 2-3 attempts to start.

Has this problem been solved? Car was recently in a service and no fault codes were detected.
