Where to get a KOYO power steering pump?

Hi all,

does anyone know where to get a new KOYO power steering pump?

According to my local garage here in Norway, the power steering pump of my 2002 Fabia 1.4 is dead. The pump is apparently the KOYO type and is no longer marketed by Skoda in Norway (nor Sweden, where it's common for Norwegian to take their cars for repair). The official replacement from Skoda is a KOYO to TRW rebuild kit (part number 6Q1423070X). Cost: 1100 GBP for the kit and GBP 450 for labour. So I am looking for an alternative.

So far, I have not been able to find a shop that sells the KOYO pumps online. I only found two companies that refurbish used ones: http://www.bba-reman.com and http://www.direkt-kfzteile.de/ (eBay shop: http://stores.ebay.de/dkfz24-shop). I sent an email to bba-reman today to find out what they can offer. The other company sells refurbished KOYO pumps for EUR 500. Does anyone have any experience with these?

All help appreciated.

Ok,

thank you, both! Couldn't find the KOYO version at eurocarparts. Guess I will need some luck then, if I am to find a new one.

I am almost getting used to having no power steering now, and will certainly not pay the equivalent of 1500 GBP to get it back...

Eurocarparts,

thanks for checking up on this.

The part number I was given by my dealer is 6Q0423162BX, but the following numbers all refer to the same KOYO PAS pump:

6Q0 423 155 AJ

6Q0 423 155 AH

6Q0 423 155 AA

6Q0 423 155 AD

6Q0 423 155 AL

6Q0 423 155 AG

6Q0 423 155 X

6Q0 423 155 L

6Q0 423 156 R

6Q0 423 156 K

6Q0 423 162 X

6Q0 423 162 BX

6Q0 423 162 BV

6Q1 423 070 X

This is according to http://stores.ebay.de/dkfz24shop, which sell them refurbished for EUR 500.

Damn!

Using the OE part number, i managed to find the right one:

619440910 - POWER STEERING PUMP VARIOUS VAG SMI-KOYO MAKE ONLY

However, we had no stock.....

I've just had word back from our Steering Pump Specialist, who has spoken to TRW.

TRW produce both the pumps (The TRW and the KOYO one) however they have stopped production of the KOYO, meaning we cannot get hold of it.

Because of this, the old CORE stock is very hard to get hold of, meaning the recon prices get pushed up! :'(

Sorry i cant help

No problem,

that was very helpful as it confirms that the pump is out of production, it's not just Skoda that stopped supplying them. Seems I should make an effort to find a good used one, then.

Thanks again, Eurocarparts.

Vgnils,

Have you fixed your Fabia with TRW type pump? or have you got a Koyo pump? Please, share you experience.

Alex Minkin,

apologies for the late reply - I didn't get an e-mail notification about your post.

I eventually bit the bullet and had my local Skoda dealer do the rebuild from KOYO to TRW. It cost me about 12 000 NOK (1300 GBP), but I was told that the job should have been about twice this price. I was given a wrong quote upfront because they didn't realize the extent of the job, but they were very decent and stuck to their original offer, even when they discovered the mistake. The repair worked out well, although the new pump makes a whining noise that can be heard at low speed, apparently due to less sound insulation of the new pump (the garage couldn't do anything about it...).

If this job is equally expensive elsewhere, broken KOYO pumps could be a real threat to early Fabias. My understanding is that the failures are caused by long-term exposure of the electronics to moisture and that there will be few or no indications of failure until it suddenly goes dead. So getting a used pump is risky. The refurbishment option mentioned above may be the best bet.

Did the BBA-RECON people ever reply to your enquiry - I was under the impression that that company was okay (read about it in car magazine after finding it on the internet - never needed to use them - yet!).

Someone might correct me, but, I think that it was the sound insulation that trapped water and killed these pumps - that will be the reason why the newer pumps have no insulation along with maybe them being quieter so not needing the insulation.

I never actually contacted them (since I realized that I was given a good price on a KOYO-to-TRW rebuild), but I didn't come across anything negative when I researched this.

That's what I read somewhere also, that the insulation trapped water. It makes sense, then, that the newer pumps do away with it. I would rather have some whining noises than another 2600 GBP repair...

I just realized that I wrote in my first post that I sent BBA-reman an e-mail. I must have forgotten. I searched through my e-mail account, but couldn't find anything related to them. Must have been an online form - it seems I never got an answer, then...

Ouch. That's a lot of money for the pump rebuild.

No idea what pump mine is fitted with but I can also hear a feint whine from outside the car at low speed etc.

Phil

I think that it was not a pump rebuild that the OP had to get done, it was a full coversion from Koyo to TRW and if that was indeed a full conversion, it would include a new rack + pump + angle sensor and maybe some wiring.

It was indeed a full conversion. I don't know exactly what parts were involved besides the pump, but it was certainly more than my dealer had anticipated, which is why the price I payed was about half of what it should have cost. The dealer initially came up with a price of 1550 GBP, but I think they felt a little bad for me and brought it down to 1200. When I picked the car up, I was told that it should have cost about twice as much, i.e. around 2400.

Now, both parts and labour prices are high in Norway, but I expect that this job would be expensive everywhere.
