Generator/charger problem?

Featured Replies

I got some wierd problem.. my charger is not working probebly.. when i start the car, i think my charger is still not working.. i need to use throttle to get +3000rpm, then the charger seems to work problebly :S my light power is pretty week when i start the car, but after 3000rpm, everything seems to "light" up. And if i dont get that 3000rpm before the actually driving, my abs warning light comes on after 15-30min driving.. and got some other problems too. Any suggestions?

Try checking the fuses & connections on top of the battery for corrosion.

Hmm is there anything else i could do? :(

I assume you mean the alternator, it could be a problem with either the auxillary belt or the alternator pulley. Do the air conditioning and power steering work OK?

Seconded.

Also, do you have a voltmeter? A cheap digital one like mine should cost about £10, and will confirm when you're getting a positive charge level, let you test battery retained voltage, continuity test fuses...

Are you just getting the one warning light? The fuse box on top of the battery needs checking as the alternator cable corrodes and causes problems. So I would check the alernator cable first

Try and find somebody with a DC Current reading clampmeter, with a maximum reading of about 200 to 600 amps.Fluke are the leaders in this field, but are very expensive £150 plus. You just clamp it around the high current output Alternator lead, and gives a reading in Direct Current.Get someone to open the throttle, turn on loads like headlights ,heater motor on full.I would expect a reading between 40 t0 80 amps to flow from the alternator.

No wires need to be cut,or terminals disconnected (Electronics don't like this).Don't get caught buying a cheap £10 to £20 clampmeter,on Ebay.It states it is DC,It is - DC voltage!,and AC current only!
