Brake upgrade options

Featured Replies

Hi guys

My Monte 105TSi is going great. Engine has run in a treat (1300miles so far) and now with the full rev range available she really flies! Getting her to stop again, however, isn't fully confidence inspiring! The brakes just don't feel like they've got enough bite to them (yet?). I'll be looking at changing the suspension and addition of RARB (probably after winter now) and would appreciate some advice on possible brake upgrades while everything's off.

My first thoughts are on compatibility of the VRS (or comparable VAG) rear disc setups. Are the stock arms, hubs and master cylinder suitable for disc applications?

As for the fronts, are they the same as fitted to the VRS already? If so, is a simple disc and/or pad change going to make a difference? Or do we need to look at whether the popular 312mm setups will squeeze under standard 17s? And will a better front setup leave the car feeling unbalanced with drums out back?

Finally, has anyone noticed a better 'feel' under-braking as standard with sorted suspension only? Mine feels rather 'floaty' at speed on undulating roads and I wonder if this, couple with ABS, maybe contributing to the feeling of not pulling up very quickly.

There's plenty of VRS tuning going on already, but I'm sure there's plenty of Monte (and other Fabia) owners looking looking for MORE!!!

Thanks all!

Matt

Just a possible thought given how little millage the car has done. Have you actually managed to heat cycle and bed in the break pads and disks yet?

One of the members posted a guide somewhere unfortunatly I can't remember where but having properly used the breaks in the VRS they are better now than they ever were before they were used hard.

Now I have my coilovers and RARB fitted with approx 40mm drop my VRS estate is a lot more planted and the braking seems more sure footed in that there is a lot less weight transfer going on and that seems to keep the brake balance more neutral.
