Upgrades - for reliability..

Featured Replies

So, my car is a daily drive covering about 30K a year and is at 130K at the moment.

as things go wrong I fix them myself and upgrade if possible.

so far I have treated myself to a map from Shark and 312 brakes, RARB and 16" wheels to fit over the brakes.

I had a turbo go at 28K which destroyed the engine but it was still under warranty so replaced, however, since I am now 100K further on I am looking at a bit of preventative maintenance :giggle:

the obvious replacement seems to be the GT1749VB (PD150 turbo) and while more power is always nice I dont really need it and my thinking is that it would be far better for the turbo to be under stressed than working at its limits. does this sound like a reasonable plan or would i be better off going down a different route?

would it also be worth changing the injectors at the same time? dont know if the bigger injectors with a reduced duration would give any benefit. if I dont go for a mad increace in power then there may not be any point in spending on them.

still on the standard clutch but would upgrade when it eventually goes but seems strong enough for the moment so no hurry on that.

looking for opinions really - worthwhile changes, or waste of money :D

I changed to the Cupra console bushes purely for the longer life they offer (having had them fail on 2 Fabias around 40k)... but no point in changing them until your current ones give up.. but on that milage I can't see them having loads a life left in them.

If ya not fussed about an EGR delete, then getting it turned right down will mean less gas gets circulated which should mean it takes longer for the sludge to build up.

cupra console and powerflexed it about 55K and mapped out the EGR

20K on and having just stripped the top end for a head gasket change I can say that there is no sludge at all

will be doing another round of bushes soon as they must be getting near to the limits by now.

more looking towards the engine at the moment. the remap obviously puts it under more stress so anything that helps reduce the stress seems like it may be a good idea - the turbo being my first point of concern.

I had considered swapping the PD100 for PD130/150 but the electronics look to be a lot of hassle so think I will work with what I have.

Ah you have a pd100?

Id put a 150 turbo in it!

Maybe some 130/150 injectors too

Yes PD100

Any benefit to the injectors?

Don't really want much more power as such but suspect there must be some benefit to a shorter injection duration.

An intercooler will keep intake temps down and with the engine getting colder air you will also get a bit more power and be less likely to melt stuff (like turbos :D)

You've got a 5 speed box, so you have to be a little careful with the torque. Dunno what turbo you have at the moment or what power you've been mapped to. Though ISTR 140-145BHP from a PD100 remap. Would a BV39/KP39 turbo off a PD130 be an upgrade? Injectors would help at the top end IMO. That should map to 160-170 with limited boost/torque at lower end to try to preserve the gearbox/clutch

You could stick the clutch from a Golf VR6 in place of the original plus it's rated to 300lb/ft

I can only see a shorter duration being helpful if your current mapping is causing smoke (and heat so turbo stress) by injecting too long past top dead centre. If not then I don't see why upgrading will be of any benefit unless of cause you fit a bigger turbo like of a vRS or 1749va/b.

No benefit in upgrading your injectors unless you're increasing power over and above what the standard ones can cope with.

Worst case, an injector fails. Big deal, replace it as and when... changing all four is a waste of time and money.

Thanks for all of the suggestions,

Standard stage 1 map from Shark which seems to be perfect on fueling. Don’t get any smoke visible at all in daylight and only a very slight haze in lights behind at night and only if I use the revs far higher than needed.

Have not bothered to have it on a RR as it drives beautifully which is what I wanted but another PD100 that was on a RR was I think 150hp so safe to say its 140+ or there about.

I need to fit a FMIC anyway as I want the space that the SMIC uses for something else so thank you, that gives me an even better excuse to move on with that project :giggle:

So it looks like the PD150 turbo as it will be working near enough stock in my setup and FMIC are the next steps, if a good deal comes up on injectors then it might be worth grabbing them as it would let me take a small bump up in power if I want but not needed yet.

When the clutch does go then I will replace it with an uprated one like from the VR6 as that makes good sense.

Thanks again
