ASR system problem..? with larger wheels.

Featured Replies

ok lets start from the beginning...

the car on its std 16" rims drove fine.

now ever since i fitted the 19" merc amg rims my ASR system is kicking in on the slightest of bends at low speeds.

its an absolute nightmare as when going around an island for example, the car slows itself right down.emoticon-0149-no.gif

so as it is now i have done the following to try and cure the issue -

* - 19" rims fitted with NO spacers. = asr kicking in too early.!

* - 19" rims fitted WITH 15mm on front & 5mm spacers on rear. = asr kicking in too early.!

so the asr is still kicking in way too soon when not needed even at low speed.emoticon-0124-worried.gif

the rims are:

Front - 19x8.5 with 215/35/19 tyres.

Rear - 19x9.5 with 245/35/19 tyres.

the front tyres are stretched on so could it be down to the tyre size that is causing the asr to kick in at the wrong time.? the rear tyres dont have a stretch as such.

but with that said, where on the car is the asr system fitted? the front or rear? or both?

i can only think this problem maybe down to tyre size?

is there anyway of disabling the asr system at all?

Most likely the reason for ASR/ABS kicking in is that rear tyre diameter is too big (3.2% bigger than front tyres) and the abs sensors detect apparent front-rear wheel slip and activate ABS/ASR. Most ASR equipped cars have 4 wheel ABS, otherwise they would only be able to detect single wheel spin. All ESP equipped cars have 4 wheel ABS sensors (and yaw sensor).

Change rear tyres to same as front, 215/35/19 and the problem will go away. You probably could also have 225/35/19 all round.

Assuming of course the wheels are not damaged / defective. I had a severely damaged tyre sidewall once that was capable of triggering traction control above 50mph.

is there anyway of disabling the asr system at all?

There is a switch on the dashboard.......
