91 vs 94 tyre load index

Featured Replies

Hi

Just looking at getting some new tyres. My current tyres have a load index of 94 but my spare has a load of 91.

Having looked around tyres of a load index of 91 are cheaper than the 94 or XL type.

Can i use tyres that have a load index of 91 on my petrol Vrs ?

thanks

Interestingly mine have a load weighting of 92....

Tried to find a definitive on this for my Scout which has 98W fitted (Well over the top methinks) as the insurance company will require manufacturer rated tyres to be fitted. However try as I mite I could not find a definite speed and load rating for the tyres recommended by Skoda for my vehicle.

I think Theoretically 89H will do on paper but do Skoda allow this and if so why does it have 98W fitted? In the end I have decided on 94V, how much of a problem can it be? It's over rated for the top speed and load of the car!

For a VRS I guess a speed rating of V is necessary but I would have thought a load rating of 91 should be adequate theoretically, but who knows as manufacturer recommended ratings seem hard to come by.

The Octavia should be 91 AFAIK, the reason why the vRS has 92 is that you can only get a rating of 92 with that rim/profile combination (225/40/R18). As for being ok with less than 91, that may be true, but I think most manufacturers stick with the 91 as it is quite common and fine for most of the range.

You can see a bigger price drop going from a 91V to a 91H, especially for winter tyres. Not sure I'd want to risk lowering the load rating, but moving to H is still 130mph so should be fine for most!

Interestingly Skoda say it is ok to take a one point speed drop (I.e. V to H) when going to winter tyres, I guess you are expected to drive a bit slower in winter conditions.

You can check the tyre spec that was OEM on your car.

Type the option codes into this website codes on sticker on service record

For example, my code returns: H6T = Tires 205/60 R15 V.

Consequently, your insurance company will know what you should have under the car if it is OEM standard.

HTH

Stock Scout has 94W.
