Jason's "spray a random bit of trim" thread....

Featured Replies

Found a random bit of trim today which I identified right away as the panel for over the passenger door handle area. Drivers side has the electric mirror switch in it. :)

Thought it would be a bit natty/random to try and spray it with a Skoda logo so this evening I endeavoured to get a cut out onto sticky label paper, and have the template. The idea is to spray it with silver basecoat, remove the template (hopefully won't be too tough to remove off the matt plastic under it) and then lacquer over the top of the whole thing....

I guess if I had thought about it I could have black magic'd the panel, done the sticker, done the silver then I would have lacquering over actual 100% paint :D

First coat of silver on. I only hope the label comes off cleanly when it comes to it. :D Another coat of silver tomorrow before allowing a week or so to set rock hard, then label removal.... :D Could all go so wrong!

And yes, before anyone says "ya missed a bit at the top" - I did spot that and gave it a little bit more. I think it was more shadow than actual missed paint. :)

I would have keyed and plastic primer first but good luck mate.

I am hoping as its interior there won't be any physical touching of it to affect the surface, so it should be OK. Being by the door handle area might make it risky though, haha! I have the logo template so can always go back and start again. The vent surrounds were done without primer and they are ok (not perfect, but ok)

Shall see how it goes. :D

Three coats of basecoat now. Time to leave for 3 or 4 days before I attempt to remove the sticky label print....

Well, removed the paper today and it seems OK. Just need to leave a couple more days as there is sticky label residue on the black bits. I want the silver paint rock hard before I start attacking with warm water. Then lacquer process begins. :D

Next stage. Decided that cleaning wasn't going to happen - removed what gunk I could and then opted for a bit of a blackening up using a permanent marker.

The flash & macro makes this look a lot worse than it is, but from a small distance I am hoping once lacquered, none of the obvious imperfections in the black bit stand out. I really should have painted the whole thing black first, but there we go.... :)

Lacquer next.

Well, 250+ views and not many comments. Hopefully because you were all taught when you have nothing nice to say, say nothing. ;)

This is my "final" shot. I shall be attempting to polish a bit with some SRP at some point before fitting. I would describe the overall experience and fun as "great" and the overall finish as "fine by me" :D Couple of areas went bad but from a distance it has the effect I wanted so job's a good'un! :D

Lets see some in situ pics Jason...it's a little difficult to comment on at the mo :)

Jason, it looks like you've enjoyed this! :) would it not of been easier to print a vinyl Skoda logo and stick it on? :p :peek:

It's a shame that some of the paint has bled into the black though....

Where's the fun in getting a sticker. :p Shall fit it tonight for opinions.

OK - bit later than planned

Before and after. I did the vent surrounds quite a long time ago. Without them, I think the silver would have stood out too much.

and yes, I did hack off the grilles on the door card as they were pushing on the speaker. Looking for some trim to tidy it up. :D

Looks like an improvement... :p

Sorry Jason - I hate that.... Stick to the sticker idea, pardon the pun.
