a tad disapointed and more faith lost in garages

Featured Replies

Well I bought myself a 54 plate vrs last friday from a roadside forecourt, I was happy with the price as it seemed on parr with the mileage and the fact its on the regester as a cat D :( passenger door was stoved in other than that I was overall happy but only 7 days of owning this and I'm having to replace : the cat as its blocked the spark plugs (all corroded) air filter practicly disintigrated,a wheel bearing ,drivers side window switch, and had it on the diaganostics so I'm very disapointed and lost more faith in roadside forecourts. What's anybodys views should I call the garage and demand some kind of compensation ??

If you haven't already replaced the parts, then don't IMO. You should have warranty cover (usually 30 days) and it's therefore the garage's problem to do all that work to your satisfaction. You won't get compensation though I wouldn't have thought, they will just tell you that the car had warranty cover and that you should have taken it back to them which is a fair argument since they can probably get the parts cheaper than you can so wouldn't normally be expected to reimburse retail prices including VAT and various markups.

It may depend on how the sale was worded and what you paid for it.

Was the car sold as a Cat D damaged repairable or was it already repaired.?

You have a minimum 3 months warranty and realistically 6 months under the sale of goods act.

Do a search or pop in to your local CAB.

If it's a 54 plate then it's a mk 1 and that only matters in so much that this is the mk 2 forum.

As above take it back to where you bought it.

Agreed - if it was sold as being in working condition, then the question is, given the price paid, is it reasonable for the vehicle to develop the issues that are being experienced. If not, then the seller may be required to repair it or refund the purchase cost (see link later in the post, and on the caveat that it wasn't a trade sale).

As far as I'm aware, there is no compulsion to offer a warranty (although I'd be happy if I were wrong on this). However, consumers have certain inalienable statutory rights: http://www.oft.gov.uk/business-advice/treating-customers-fairly/sogahome/sogaexplained. Note the section about faults occurring within 6 months of purchase.
