Turbo Question

Featured Replies

My brother-in-law-to-be has a Subaru Legacy Twin Turbo. After he has completed a journey he lets the engine idle for around a minute before switching it off. He says this is to keep oil pumping round the turbo while it spins down (or something like that).

Should I be doing the same?

The Octavia Owners Manual says "Do not switch off the engine immediately after operating it for a lengthy period at high engine loads, but allow it to run at idling speed for about 2 minutes to avoid any heat build up."

Does anyone do this?

Cheers in advance,

Mat.

You really only need to do this if you've been on a hard run. In normal driving normal airflow will help keep things cool.

That said there is no harm in doing it.

There was another thread about this a little while ago; trying searching it out for more details.

Cheers.

Adrian.

I do. It's good practice to do with a turbo.

You can shorten the time by driving the last bit on low revs, not spinning the turbo and starting the cool-down in advance.

Thanks for the info, I tried searching the threads but I couldn't find anything. I'll have another look. I'm still running the car in at the moment, so there haven't been any 'hard runs'... yet! ;-)
