Any buying guides / what to look for on 2.0 Auto

I may be looking at a 2.0 Auto Octavia Estate (2003) in the near future, I have had a quick look around the site but cannot find a buying guide or a list of things to typically check for when inspecting a car. Does anyone have any comments or experience of a.) the 2 litre engine and b.) the auto gearbox? I'm particularly interested to hear about known problems, weaknesses, reliability and economy.
