1.4 tdi pd cambelt change

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

Thinking of getting my daughter a 1.4 tdi. can anyone tell me the service intervals for the cambelt, I am assuming it has one and not a chain. both my handbooks are too old to list the 1.4.

Many thanks.

Hi,

You are right the 1.4 tdi is a timing belt and not a chain.

Renewal is a very debatable subject, Skoda seem to recomend 60,000 miles or 4 years; but the official vw workshop manual states engines up to 06 120,000km (74,564 miles). 07 engines onwards 150,000km (93,000miles) with no mention of a time limit.

The 1.4 tdi is the easy engine to do the timing belt on owing to the amount of space available. Please see extract from service schedule below.

Many thanks

There is a post in here from one of the techy mods on the subject .I also raised the Q at the time as mine is/was a low mileage car .Answer was at 60k or 5 years .The advice also given is to change both the waterpump and idler at same time .Possibly ( an this is only my my opinion ,it might also be a good time to think about replacing the coolant)

An if you're close to Northampton -try asking Lummox ( unit 18 in the sponsors list ) for a quote .

Whilst you're looking over the car -check the service book ,for both oil changes and the type of oil used .Personally I' also look at the front disks - IMHO the 1.4tdi could do with a bit of a meatier front brake system and though I got 55k ( actually 38k in my ownership) on the front pads , the metal disks are at the halfway stage .

There are volumes on what else to look for .But on the whole -IMHO -a nice little car ,equally at home on the motorway ( it's not ahot hatch by any means , but no slouch for atitchy 1.4) or in town .I spent a year where once a month I drove from the midlands to the north of Scotland (Old dad in specialised hospital) and it handled the M6/M74/A74 /A82 and a lot of other Highland roads with ease .
