Best deal on winter tyres atm 205/55/16

Featured Replies

Well the tyres on the car when I purchased are some no make tyres and getting low so changing anyway but figured it could be worth running winter tyres and wondered if anyone could recommend where is doing any good deals? - only need the tyres can get fitted for £10

Had a quick look and goodyear ultragrip 8 seem ok as do the conti winter contact T830 & dunlop winter sport 4D

Any advice welcomed as would like to order today if possible

Camskill are a good starting place. Generally quite hard to beat them.

tbh, you might be a tad early on ording now, as it seems stocks are still low in the UK

I personally highly rate Vredesteins winter tyres. I've used Comtrac Winter, SnowTrac (2 + 3) and Wintrac Xtreme, all have been excellent.

I have experrienced Conti winter tyres (not sure what type, on a Ford Mondeo (FWD)), and they really weren't that good.

Much less grip than my Comtrac Winter's on my RWD van.

Kwik Fit have just brought their winter tyres offerings out too (I know the OP wasn't after fitting), and they are doing 25% off as well - so that might bring their tyres down to a more sensible price)

Try mytyres.co.uk as well as Camskill. Blackcircles have priced themselves out of the tyre market as far as I'm concerned. Their prices are a joke compared to others.

Kumho I'ZEN KW27 (asymmetric) winter tyres are what I'd get. I'm dabbling with the idea now....

Other options are: Avon Ice Touring ST, Cooper Weathermaster Snow, Falken Eurowinter HS439 etc.

Also keep an eye out for the Nokian WR G2's, I bought a set last year and they are IMO very good, another benefit is their wear rate - 1mm on the driven wheels in 4,500 miles ( half that for the rears).

I got some lucky dip (brand unknown) ones ordered and waiting for my wheels to be painted for £68.50 each fitted for 205/50/17

Although thats in south wales, which may be too far for you

Not to bothered about the brand as any winter rubber has got to be better than Falken 452's in snow etc

A tenner says we have a mild winter :giggle:

Kwik fit sent me some £20 off vouchers for winter tyres and a reminder to get them refitted, as bought mine about this time last year. As have them on spare wheels, I went in to enquire about getting the nitrogen fill topped up and they confirmed 25% off. Paid £394 for 205/55/16 Conti TS830 last year and found them excellent on the 4x4.

Didn't have a good experience with Mytires delivery company, DPD, last year, hence the local Kwik Fit purchase.

Thaks for the pointers guys ;)

Plan to get through winter in oe, well other than the FULL service it is getting currently and trow some software on.....

.....then next year get the R32 stuff on and put the nice S3 2.0tfsi stuff in ;) will put a project thread up

Currently putting the edition 30 lump and 6 speed box in a vx220 (same engine)

So keeping the Q car look as its my tow car for the ikle race beast but its such an easy swap be rude not to ;)

At some point must look at why the key fob does not work the c/l :( getting bored of opening the car by the key lol

DG

I've got cooper weather masters on my winter wheels, put them on last year i'm impressed with them. One morning on the way to work i was trying to figure out why everyone was driving at 5 mph, wasn't till i got to work and fell on my ass that i realised how icy it was lol. I had no slip in the car what so ever

... and fell on my ass that i realised how icy it was lol.

been there, done that, had the big black bruise on my backside !

Andyrew has done that conversion already in his mk1 first in the country I believe with his own bare hands on his drive way ( top respect )

Looks a very easy conversion in the octavia tbh and will be my own bare hands :p

Just figured why spend loads of cash making ebuilding the 20vt when the k04 powered tfsi lump is ready for 375bhp with VERY little work ;)

Not sure if I will retain the halex setup of the older generation or change to the newer setup but thats all later on to worry about that. Will make myself a nice quiet 3" exhaust and I/C to keep with the Q car setup

Looking forward to it but just dont have time for a while with the vx220 project also :(

DG

Downpipe and ECU.

That really why I thought of those R-TEK folks

What's required to get the 375 mark from a TFSI engine ?

300ish for 'stage 1' type map ?

Haldex wise

I now have front and rear diffs, the front diff does 90% of the work, with the haldex basically stabilising the rear end. Works a treat.

So my recommendation for the best single way of upgrading a haldex is to upgrade the front diff (before blue/orange haldex, etc, etc)

Then Blue or orange (just as good as upgraded haldex II imho)

Then rear diff (does very little work tbh)

ps

on KW v3 & H&R ARB's, with cast wishbones and camber/castor correcting superpro bushes :mmm:

Ok so you have used ATB diff in the box and rear diff? And upgraded the heldex unit (aware of this upgrade)

The edition 30 / S3 / New cupra R engine has the k04 unit fitted v's mk5 gti engine which does not - also the s3/etc lump has stronger crank, diff cams etc. To get the 375 you need to replace the direct fuel injection pump on the head. Then its better exhaust / air intake / cooler

All of which are custom upgraded on the VX220 project but on the octavia just upgrade whats needed ;)

Tbh from a cost point of view prob going to run the R32 stuff for now as its my daily car and dont want it to be too stiff / track biased - have the track car for this although be good to see if what it would do round the ring (8:03 current best time)

Problem with diff etc is it can start ot get really expensive :( but do make a big difference in my experiance

Also I assume the cupra R brake / porker options will not fit under 17inch wheels? Was going to retain 16's but consider 17's

DG

8.03 around the ring is flying mucho respect

Andys car is k04 powerd I believe

Only issue is wiring I believe the rest is simples

Had 452's on my Golf.

It's all about how you drive, David!

Quiet you ...........

205/55/R16 Kumho KW23 fitted - £300 for 4. Tyrespot

That's right. Peloquin Front ATB & Peloquin rear transverse ATB, connected via Blue Haldex.

The ATB's take care of lateral traction, with the Haldex adjusting power to the rear to keep the front on course and moving forward.

The dramatic difference in tyre wear rate (front to rear) is testamment to the huge amount of extra traction the front diff gives.

Last time I looked, a new Blue Haldex was about the same as a front diff, so knowing what I know now, I'd get the diff over the Blue haldex

... To get the 375 ...

 sort of 'stage 2+' level of mods to get 'stage 3' 20v power levels

Also I assume the cupra R brake / porker options will not fit under 17inch wheels? Was going to retain 16's but consider 17's

DG

LCR Brembo's will fit some (a few) 17" wheels without spacers, vRS 17" with 5mm spacers.

;) all great info - same diff I ran in my 20vt powered Renault 5 Turbo

 sort of 'stage 2+' level of mods to get 'stage 3' 20v power levels

With a wider power band and quicker low down response ;)

No a fan of spacers :( had a wheel come loose at castle coombe many years back in my cupra R are they that much better than the cheaper smaller upgrade with decent pads and fluid?

DG

The 312mm is a big improvement over the 288mm, and will fit without hassle.

The CompBrake 6pots fit a treat too (330mm), but tbh not such a good match to Octy brake master cylinder

Which leaves the Brembo LCR/GT calipers, but both are 'fat' and then you're in to spacers ... not ideal,

Might be some other suitable 4pot caliper with suitable piston sizes, other have more knowledge on that stuff tbh.
