More ICE advice please

Featured Replies

Riteo chaps after a little more advice please :)

The system so far (nothing purchased yet)

Headunit - Pioneer DEH P77MP click here (any other recomendations in this price range?)

Components - Alpine SPR176A click here

Subwoofers - 2x Alpine SWR1221D (2ohm dual voice coil) click here or Alpine SWR1241D (4ohm dual voice coil) click here , which one to go for, both the same price but one is 2ohm and one is 4ohm?

Amp(s) - Now here's the problem :o I am uttlery (sp?) Confused, Idealy I would like the two subs and components to be run off one amp, but I want whats best for them (if its better to have one amp for the comps and one for the subs) But the ohms marlakey is confusing me (can you believe I am an electrician?) Budget it around 200.00 but may be slighty exceeded if its needed

Power Cap - Do I need one with the above system? How do they work is it like a capacitor (as I see there in farads) again if its needed please advise and I'll save a little bit more

Many many thanks for your comments/replies :)

James

one amp is possible.. you can either run in tri mode - which will require ext crossovers.. or use a 4channel amp.

I have a suitable class A JVC highend amp available if your interested...

re the headunit.. good unit but wont match the dash lighting... where as the green illum alpines will - and seem to handle mp3 / cdrw much better than pion.. (i know... i have the pion flip screen...)

drop me a pm if you have further q!

I give this to a power cap. :finger: Much better things to do with power issues, but a TDI doesn't need one really (good alternator, and damn good battery ;))

Ohms... still got me stumped a litle too. :( But I believe 4 ohm would be easier to find amps for. I guess you want a four channel amp if you plan to power the lot with one? Problem with this is the subs are going to want more juice than the components I should think, so a 4 channel amp might underpower them. I know I've gone a little OTT but to have different amps for different jobs is better IMO. So, either run a smaller 2 channel amp for the components, and then maybe a beefy 2 channel amp for the subs, or a maybe a huge monoblock one? Personally I run two 460w RMS amps, one going to each sub. Its still not right though yet in my opinion. :(

Generally though, you can't go wrong with Alpine.

Walkie, think carefully whether you need two subs...

I run one cheap-o JL Audio 12 in an EFMAX designed box and it rocks.

Do you want crazy crazy bass, or nice, clean, accurate re-enforcing bass?

Thanks for the replies  Very helpfull (why cant it be easier?!)

Josh, (where have you been btw?) I had one 12" before and was not impressed after hearing two 12"ers and from some good advice from Bengie I've decided to give two ago

Hehe, I got a bit dissalusioned (sp?) with this forum, but I'm back!

Cool about having two...

Try two in an EFMAX box mate, you'll be blown away!

This is the worst website in the world, but if you fill in the questionaire and give him 25 quid (35 for a 2 sub box), he'll design you the best sounding box you're likely to hear.

Seriously.

In reverse order , don't bother with a cap.

They make sod all diference and look stupid.

Amp - I've got a kenwood similar to this one http://www.mcsdirect.co.uk/acatalog/info%5f2%5fKAC7251%2ehtml and it rocks.

Get a smaller 2 channel amp to run the components. Separate amps will make adjusting levels much easier.

Subs - Go for 4 ohm as it will be easier to find amps for them than the 2 ohm version.

Components - Kenwood again for me http://www.mcsdirect.co.uk/acatalog/info%5f2%5fKFCPSR71P%2ehtml

Very hi-tech and lovely sound.

Head unit - Not sure what everyone sees in the pioneer. It looks ok in the right car but seems quite a basic unit.

What ever you do get , make sure it has high and low pass filters. The high pass filter will stop any low bass going to the components. When you have 2 subs then you won't notice bass from the front , and removing it will put a lot less stress on the components. The sound will be much clearer and you will need less power to drive them at decent levels. Also get one with as many pre-outs as possible plus a sub-out.

http://www.mcs-direct.co.uk/acatalog/info%5f4%5fCDXF7700%2ehtml is a very nice looking unit in a similar style to the pioneer but I'm not 100% certain it has the high pass filter

Find a 4 channel amp capable of running a 2 ohm load for the subs and use two channels for the components (from the front pre outs) and the remaining two channels on the subs. (make sure its from Sub out . and not a stereo preout)

Also would be handle to have a remote bass control to lower the bass when politeness requires.

35 for a 2 sub box, thats a bloody good price, i'll give them a go

That's just for the design...

You have to build it yourself, but the instructions are well easy to understand...

I made mine with ZERO problems, and I'd never made anything out of wood before ;)

Do a search for "EFMAX" on Talk Audio.

ah ha... Interested to see what they come up with.

Looks like i'll be getting the Jigsaw out after all.

Still in a fluster about amping :(

I woudlnt recommend running two 12 subs from in a one amp solution, minimum two amps, one sub is fine from a one amp solution, decied first what amp to go for before choosing your subs....look at this tuturial about how to wire up the subs and check that against your choice of amp to see what will give you the best power for bucks

Walkie if you need any help just ask.

Cheers for the advice Joel :)

As soon as I've sorted the gear out ill be giving you a shout

edit: it looks as the EFMAX box man no longer operates

I'll DEFINATELY vouch for Eskerine's knowledge and Skill.

My sub is sitting nicely in one of Esky's boxes and I love it to bits. He sure knows how to build proper sub boxes. ;)

2 amps (one 2-ch for the comps) and another mono or bridged 2ch will do the sub. Does help to have a 4ohm SVC sub or a 2ohm DVC sub. You don't really want a 4ohm DVC sub though as it'll be tricky to amp.

I read on talkaudio that he know longer designs them? I think the box is really important for subs so definently want to consider a custom designed box.

I thought someone said its harder to find an amp for a 2ohm DVC sub... Maybe that was 2ohm SVC... now I am just getting muddled

Think of the extra weight Walkie, get yourself a remap first :)

Would do, had planned an awful lot in one weekend (remap, suspension, exhaust) Thought i'd best check the insurance and

So i'll be waiting a while before I take the plunge unfortunatly :(

Not surprised considering Direct Line wanted to extort

That's a shame about Erskine no longer designing boxes...
