Featured Replies

Hi guys,

My wife has just returned from germany for half term week and the car has just covered 8000 miles and is an 11 plate and oil warning light has come on, I check the oil level and its nearly dry?????

Has anyone any similar incidents or is this common? (I hope not or back to VRS I go next year! ;) )

Thanks in advance

Mark

When did you previously check the oil level?

I think skoda say 1 litre per 1000m is ok,so if its not used any until now then id top it up & keep a regular check on it,when did you last check/top up your oil? My vrs use's a little bit of oil inbetween services.

Most cars use a little oil when new, this usually settles down after 20k or so.

My Octavia 1.8 TSi uses a bit of oil around 1LT every 8-10k.

I belive its normal and it hasnt got any worse now its properly run in.

Now on 54,000 miles in 13 months.

Had the same last weekend after a trip to Glasgow, just turned 10k and required 1ltr top up, must admit did not check level before setting off.

Biggest shock was 16 quid for a ltr, What the, first time I have bought oil in a long long time.

Blimey! Not much point in having an oil change at a service then, as you'll have cycled through 10 litres (fixed interval) between services. :o :o

All engines have a design consumption of oil, and as mentioned before, it will consume more during the first part of its life. Cylinder bores have to wear off the asperities in the honing marks to enable the surface to hold an oil film.

My S3 was only 1 litre of oil to raise from min to max on the dipstick.

Up to the 1st service at 9,600 miles my 1.8TSI used a litre of oil. In the next 3000 it has dropped 1/4 way from max.

Has anyone else noticed how sensitive this engine is to being on the level when dipping the oil. This is the only car I have had where the oil drops right off the stick if I dip it pointing down my sloping drive. With every other car I have always been able to check it on the drive and make allowance for the slope.

Did you buty 2nd hand or from a dealer? If the latter then they would/should have told you that new engines can be quite thirsty when it comes to oil and that you should check the level regularly (I'd say every couple of weeks on a new car). If you have been driving it without checking oil levels and have waited until the warning light comes on then that's not really very sensible I'm afraid.

Yes, because the crap also gets burned off with the oil. :dull:

Mine burned about 2 ltr in the first 10K but has used very little since.

I have 5lt of Quantum 507 engine oil for toping up £25 + vat could have bought 20 lts for £80 + vat.
