Oil comsumption / 1lt in 1000km

Featured Replies

Hi there,

today I found out that my Vrs has consumed 1lt of Oil in just 1000km!!(620miles)

Is that normal considering that the usual consumption was 1lt in 3000km? (1860miles) [no it's not!]

The engine has 18700km (11600miles)

no trace on leaking in the garage

thnks for coop

some people have had this sort of oil consuption ( I didn't 1 litre in the first 10k, 250mil in the second 10k) and the dealers have said its still within acceptable limits... how are you running it in? drive it "normally" dont be afraid of full revs and full throttle, you dont want the engine to 'glaze'....

Pip, your oil consumption is excessive and I believe above the amount VAG regards as normal. Although you will need to check with your dealer to be sure. Considering your car is run-in with 11,600 miles on the clock I would not expect such high oil consumption. Have you owned if from new? If so how did you run it in? Too gently will result in glazed bores and mucho oil consumption as Sharkrider indicates, but unless you know what you are doing, full throttle and load can also result in glazed bores and mucho oil consumption as the engine ages, performance will also start to drop off.

One further point to check. Is the car used for short runs mostly where it doesn't fully warm up the oil to normal operating temperature and keep it there for a reasonable time to evaporate the condensation? If this is the case the engine breather can be partially blocked and this will have the effect of making the engine use more oil. In addition, some 1.4Vrs engines came from the factory with incorrectly manufactured engines. Bores size was not to spec and crankshaft journals undersize too but I'm going from memory here and can't remember all the detail. This caused these engines to use massive amounts of oil. Is yours one of these? Speak to your dealer, he can tell you. Mostly Skoda have probably identified the engines at risk but you should check.

Good luck.

I'll be following this with interest.

I had mine ex-demo with 4000 miles on the clock and it was serviced before I had it. I've never molly-coddled it, why have a car like this and tootle around at 40mph  That said, I don't go everywhere at wharp speed lol

Anyway, it was serviced in September with 14000 miles on the clock and from when I had it to the service, it hadn't needed a drop of oil. In October, one month and one day from date of service, the oil light came on, checked oil levels and it needed well over a litre. Phoned Skoda and explained what I've put above and they say the vRS's burn a lot of oil and that the oil consumption is normal, is it really? Nothing in 10000 miles and then over a litre in about 1000 miles?

Which reminds me, must check oil levels again........

these engines really do go to extreams don't they? like I said, I used 1 liter in 10,000 miles and 250mill in the next 10k.... going on what you just said... I'll keep a close eye ;)

I drive it pretty slowly till the oil temp doesn't reach 70-80c° (changing gear at about 2000-2500rpm - 60mph max), and than if I'm in the mood I'll put my foot down

The car is 1year old-I owned it from new. For the first 2000km (1250miles) I never went above the 5000rpm, If so, for a little time ,after that I started gently to give it the beens. nothing serious..

The car is used to make the ride to work and back home - its a 16km (10miles) run - fast city streets with traffic lights and a bit of B roads. I always wait for the car to cool down for 2mins before turning the engine off. I always wait for the engine rpm go to idle before taking off
