VRS 7th Gear

Featured Replies

I haven't had a chance to get my VRS on the track yet but I was wondering if anyone else thought they should of made the 7th gear into a bit more of a cruising gear. Surely if you are accelerating full out on a track you aren't going to use the 7th gear very much at all. What sort of speed do you change up to 7th on a track? 120 ish? so why didn't they make it so on the motorway at 70mph it was running at less that 2000 revs? I think the economy on the car would be even better and you're not really missing out on performance as I doubt you will notice much change when accelerating in 7th. As I say though I haven't played with it on the track yet so maybe you need it reving a bit higher in the 7th gear. Any thoughts?

7th gear? Been on tracks for years and never got beyond 5th and only very occasionally

+1. seems a bit odd but these cars ratios are for acceleration.

every max speed run I've seen in the vRS (check out you tube) has been in 6th, not enough power to reach the changeup point for 7th... so you could argue 7th is a cruising gear...

however I understand what you are saying about revs on the motorway

I would have said it was a cruising gear personally. As said above, max speed is hit in 6th gear

If you use sport mode it does not change up past 5th, quote from owners handbook about S mode

The gearbox does not shift into the 7th gear in the position S, because the maximum speed is achieved with the 5th gear.

Couldn't agree more. The low ratio 7th gear is going to be a real downside when the motorway speed limit goes to 80. Maybe we can set up a petition to get Skoda to provide an optional remap for the DSG?

or just use the ZF 8 speed gear box like everyone is doing now.

5th on track is max.

what would a remap do? The gear ratio is set by the size of the cogs and teeth etc, not by electronics. you can still hit 40+mpg at 80mph anyway

For me 80mph is the critical speed. Much more and consumption drops like a brick.

You can reach top speed (139 MPH) in 5th gear... 6 and 7th are just for your economy when driving normally

lol, why not give us 180mph top speed from an extra two gears then B)

Don't say things like that its giving me ideas :)

I reckon it wouldnt be too stable at the current top speed without some modification anyway :giggle:

I can assure you it is pretty stable at top speed. Until you touch the brakes that is but i have removed a fair bit of weight from the back of my car.

Also my speedo is well out or I've had over 150 out of mine in standard form on an air strip

You really think there is enough room to fit an 8 speed conventional auto with torque convertor in a supermini?

Besides that it isn't available for fwd with transverse engines.

ZF do have a 9 speed transmission for FWD with transverse engine but it's aimed at the family car sector. Not sure how they plan on shifting those when all the mainstream manufacturers are going for Dual Clutch DSG boxes.

Cheers

If you fit it with a Shimano derailleur gearbox you can have 27 gears!!!

Need a GP motorbike chain though.

Tony :D

That would suck so much if it was sequential, having to go through EVERY 27 GEARS when you stopped.

When I was going for max top-speed in the vRS I had to shift into 6:th and was on my way into seventh.

Over 6500 rpm it started to loose out on power and 7:th gear would probably not have helped... but I will test after this winter if 300 bhp is enough to make it move on 7:th gear!

300 bhp 1.4 will be nice! :)

Will the supercharger need upgrading or just smaller pulley etc?

I had a BMW 5 series with an 8 speed auto box, it was a 60 reg car, however it was never as slick as the Fabia is with big delays in gear selection especially on A roads.

I find the 7 ok and in any car fuel economy is dreadful the faster you go

Supercharger will only work as it does today : as a jumpstart for the turbo.

I will go for a turbo with very low lag so the supercharger shouldn't have any problems with that :).

Stay tuned, there will be more info about the car later on ;).

with a stage 2 map AND intercooler it'll be able to use the top gears even more. The struggling your getting in 6th is probably heat soak tbh
