Seat belt retaining strap

Featured Replies

Hi folks, last weekend I picked up my two month old 61 plate ex-demo Yeti Elegance with 2500 miles on the clock. I am extremely pleased so far but have one quick question.

When giving the car a thorough once over before ordering I noticed the left rear seat was damaged (split leather). The salesman was quite happy to swap the seat with another Elegance (really easy on a Yeti  ) so all Ok. But on getting home with car I noticed one back seat has a strap on the shoulder area for holding the seat belt (the new seat) but the other doesn’t. Salesman has agreed to swap the other seat so they match :) . So, what’s the story with these straps? Why do some seats have them and others don’t? For info, going by the date stamp on parts in the car, I would guess my car was built after May this year.

Mine from 2010 MY2011 has them. Something to do with holding the seatbelt in place.

Hi,

my first 2009 Yeti SE had them but the current late production MY11 Elegance does not. I think they were deleted in January this year :wonder:

Mine has them and they are totally pointless in my book. I've never used them. If you thread the seatbelt through it you have to undo it again to flip or remove the seat! So what is the point?! Good riddance.

Glad it isn't just me then, Johann!!

Would they be for use with children when you need the belt tighter across the top of the seat?

No, they make no difference, and are only held by a popper anyway.

and if they come undone they rattle....emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Thanks all. I couldn't see the point of them, but I swapped the seat this morning so I've got them on both sides now so at least I'm symmetrical.

PITA if you ask me.

Never used them and doubt I ever will.

Mind you the extra weight might contribute a little to improving the "jiggly ride" :giggle:

Apparently they have been deleted because of the number of warranty claims for the seat seam splitting where the strap is sewn in (mine included!). The strap parts company with the seat because the seam cannot take the force of a tall person sitting upright with the belt threaded through the strap.

In my case, my car had been in the showroom prior to me buying it and presumably someone had used the strap to pull the seat back upright without first releasing the catch.

At least it's an easy repair for a competent upholsterer as the whole seat cover just zips off.

Thanks for the heads-up on that, I think mine will remain unused.

The only useful purpose they serve is to make it easy for rear seat passengers to find the belts. Other than that, waste of time!

Having said that, they do reduce the likelihood of the rear belt buckles rattling against the hard plastic wheel arch trim if your last passenger when leaving didn't stow the buckle in its receptacle (whose design isn't very good).
