Parking Sensor issues

Featured Replies

A quick simple question regarding parking sensors. My new to me MY58 Octy has Sensors fitted in the rear bumper but yet I don't seem to have the bleeps. Is it possibe it is not fitted or is it faulty, how can I check this, also when I select reverse I get an audible warning sound but nothing else. Advice please. D15VRS.

I am guessing you don't have a visual cue on your radio/head unit screen but if you get a continuous tone then it might simply be a faulty or even wet or dirty sensor. Mine does this for instance when there is dead bug stuck to one or a bit of mud and I can check which sensor is doing it on the screen.

This may be a daft question but have you tested them by reversing up to something?

The fact that you get the single beep when selecting reverse suggests the system is working.

As above check your radio display, do you get a picture of a car with lines emitting out of the back?

When a sensor fails you should get a continuous beep as soon as you engage reverse which stays on until you change out of reverse gear...

silver1011, No not a daft question at all. But yes I have reversed upto a wall, No I do not get a picture of a car emiting lines on the Radio Screen, the sound lasts for 10/15 seconds guessing.

TsvRS you also say a Sensor could be at fault but how do I find out which it is, I checked on the Unit is it PDC Vol thats up so I would get a sound.

If the beep is more than ten seconds when you engage reverse then you have a fault.

A VCDS scan will tell you the faulty sensor. Or use an assistant and listen to the sensors whilst reverse is engaged, the faulty sensor will not click, the working ones will.

Is it a factory system?

Ah OK, so the beep when you select reverse isn't a short singular beep, you are getting a continuous sound for 10-15 seconds?

As above, this is confirming a fault.

There a few threads on this, a recent one too if I remember correctly.

I have heard that it is possible to hear a clicking from the sensors (with the ignition on and car in reverse gear) if you can get your ear close enough. If you are able to isolate one of the four sensors not clicking this should help to identify if the fault is a dodgy sensor.

Here it is...

Just remember not to let the neighbours see you :giggle:

Just been round the back of the car but cannot hear any clicking sounds, yet when engaging reverse I got the long beep sound.

You need the ignition on and the engine not running (fairly obviously emoticon-0143-smirk.gif) then select reverse.

Put your ear right next to each sensor - you can hear a very faint clicking sound. This is of course assuming your sensors are factory fit, and not aftermarket ones. This is how I diagnosed mine, and it has worked for others.

Get someone to scan the car with VCDS - you will have a better idea of what is happening then as it should have logged a fault code or two if you have a sensor out. This will be no help if they are aftermarket though.
