Hi all, To cut a short story even shorter, had a argument with the mrs so took it out on my beloved Octavia vrs.....wheelspun off(Nothing more than what could happen in the wet, none of this boyracer tyre smoking etc) and heard a clunk. Stopped to see what I had driven over and found sum metal block(Thought it was engine block) and approx 6 ball bearings(nicely oiled up)

Engine still running fine, but gears would not engage and grinding noise. Thinking could do without this after spending £500 on the mrs' car just for MOT+work and x2 tyres.

Cannot get under car enough to view where damage has happened, but was also getting some clunking when turning the wheel whilst pushing it back onto my drive(maybe some loose metal)

Anyway, I would be extremely grateful if someone can offer assistance with the limited information I have posted...will try upload some pictures if possible as the mrds has just told me that when she had the car 3 days ago, some metal approx 5 inches long and 1inch wide with hooks either side fell into the drivers footwell...hmmmm

a>

As you can tell, i'm not that blessed with mechanical know how, so try help me save some xmas money :) and I promise not to abuse the Octavia again

Thanks,Mike

From the photo I would say CV joint has shattered.

(metal strip is what holds the gaiter on, bearings are from the CV as are the bits of shattered metal,

The spring is off you seat, oh and BTW you key is broken as well :giggle: )

I would defo say the drive shaft has gone. Probably when you pulled away sharpish and the torque has killed the CV joint on the drive shaft. (lucky if it is, as a whole lot cheaper than a gearbox/diff)

You shoud be able to see the rubber gater on the drive shaft either spilt, soaked in oil probably at the gearbox end.

Many thanks to those who replied, and yes the key has been broke a long time but the spare is fine  So I can't blame the mrs then if that's just from the seat. So I should be slightly happier if this isnt the gearbox??? Thanks again and will keep updated once got someone checking underneath etc

If it were the cv joint and driveshaft would that stop me from being able to select a gear whilst engine is running???? and is that ba stupid question? Cheers

Also, if anyone is stripping their Octavia Vrs in and around Birmingham/Tamworth B78, I might require some parts very soon ;)

If a drive shaft is gone, it should not stop the gear linkage engaging. Which is a little worrying. What could of happened is as the CV joint in the drive shaft has gone it has locked the drive shaft up in the gearbox. So as you can't get play in the shaft this may be stopping a engagement. Not common I must say.

Best bet is get car up in the air, identify the area which is damaged, as we are suspecting the drive shaft you should be able to see this very quickly. Unbolt shaft from gearbox or free it up. Then attempt to move gear linkage(with car not running)

Then let us know how you got on.

Thanks, should know within the next day or two

If it's a drive shaft, i've just got one from HERE brand new driveshaft with vw stamps on the cv joints.

lookin there mate thats the outer CV! the inner one doesnt have that size BB in, its a tripod type:

the chunks in your pic look like the outer case of one of these:

Now thats not something I ever seen before. you might find tthe gear sellection trouble is down to it all being locked up due to preasure. I would say that it could be a new box needed and driveshaft, hope its not buggered up the DMF too. with luck it will be ok but the o2j boxes are strong but not that strong, they are one of the weaker ones but still not weak if you know what I mean.

easy way of telling, put your hand thru the wheel spokes and see if there is grease in the rims.

GOOD LUCK MATE

better pic of the outer cv

Many thanks again to all who replied.

It was the outer C.V joint that had been shattered, so a new cv joint kit at £38 seems to have sorted the job.

As 2 of you mentioned, the gearbox was not engaging due to either the pressure or being locked in place when cv joint shattered.

CV joint was not very well greased and had turned a silver colour which i was told was due to fragmentation etc(Was the original from 2000)

Silly me should have realised tho that when the steering was on full lock, there was a clunking noise.....I just thought it was the power steering!!

 to all :D

so you back on the road then?

all good

Yes, but better change the off side soon too, just in case ;) . Nearly had a toyota part tho from Europarts, no idea how they did it as the reg plate given to them was correct(And it were £40 more too!)

lol,

I only use genuine parts on mine, Had a europarts one fitted in 2008 when I put the Weitecs onand broke a boot. due to reccomendation(daft choice) I had it swapped and after only 18 month 2 year the CV had play in it so I replaced again with genuine TPS parts. the one thats been on from new is still good too. even the boot is good.

Probably the cause of failure was not just your quick get away but that it was already showing signs of wear, and your getaway was the final push.

A useful tip: a clunking noise needs to be seen to and not normal sound of car :giggle:

CV are a good symptom if clunking is heard whilst turning steering as it puts stress on the joint.

Not really needed to replace if not broken unless you have heard the noise on that side too and thought it was the stereo.

Sorry excuse my humour...

yea just jack front end up and see if there is any play in it. if not then get a boot kit and just clean out the CV and re pack it with the new grease. kit is only a few £ but a new CV is £££ then exchange.
