upgrading operating system and programs question

Featured Replies

Im upgrading my laptop from vista to windows 7 as the laptop has become very slow due to all the crap added to it over the year ive had it.The current laptop memory wise etc is going to be fine to run the updated op system. Im also taking the chance to upgrade the hdd to a 500gb internal which i have from an old ps3. Ive spoken to a techie mate whos supplying the windows 7 courtesy of his company! but i have a couple of questions hes not sure on!

I have norton 360 with 300 odd days on but its currently used on 3 computers and thats its maximum. Is there a way i can "port" across the one from the old hdd to the new hdd so i dont have to buy another one?

secondly, i have itunes on it with music on an external hdd, no problem there but will itunes think its a different laptop when i reinstall it? Can i "authorise" my itunes to another computer?

Thanks for the help.

Matt

dont see an issue with it

i'd dump norton though - use Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials instead, use firefox or chrome and not Internet Explorer

reinstall itunes and authorise it - point it to the itunes data.

What processor is it and how much RAM will you have in it?

You could buy a IDE to USB adapter to help transfer your old data to your new HDD. The IDE adapter should come with IDE/Laptop IDE and Sata connector - from a amazon, its about £14 or so.

then do a fresh install of windows - perhaps with two partitions - one for the OS and one for all install programs and Data so a C: and a D: split maybe 100GB and 400Gb

So D: drive will have your Pics/Videos/Music/Docs and any programs you install will install to D:\program files

you could do just 50Gb/450Gb but its better to have spare space on the C:

Thanks for the info. Its 4gb of ram and has a quad core processor in it but unsure of the speed.I might overclock it a bit if it runs sluggish but ive been assured itll be ok by my mate. I already have a IDE to USB adapter for the programs etc that i want to keep and i have already put an 80/420 partition on the new hdd. Can i choose where the op system installs when i get round to it?

yeah - you just specify c: or d:

4gb and quad will be more than okay

Win7 will run ok on my original Atom powered netbook (single core 1.6GHz/2GB Ram), so it will be fine on your system; ditch Norton though.

avg or avast do free anti virus and win7 comes with a firewall+ windows defender, job done ;)

theres no reason to purchase antivirus when the free ones are just as good

also can i suggest a cheapish ssd just for the win7? make it much snappier and use the mechanical hdd for everything else, a crucial 64gb m4 would do the job just nice

Wouldn't recommend overclocking a laptop, cooling I'd expect to be an issue. Otherwise, echo what's been said about Avast :).

Windows 7 has two inbuilt security systems -Firewall & defender(which needs updates at times) .Once on ,try asite like Norton security check .My son did ,and with only basic 7 security ,Norton couldn't get in .Avast 4.5 FREE - YEARLY register ,but I've found no problems .if you bank on line -the banks offer a free security service ,but forgot the name .

rapport is the bank software name

firefox and no script will do the same.

You can upgrade vista to windows 7 keeping all your settings. You can then run an image backup (Built into win7), swap HDD's and restore by booting into win7 disk and selecting to restore from image,to your new hdd. In diskmgmt, you can extend the c drive to fill the 500gb drive. Upgrading will completely renew the OS and speed the machine up. No need to flatten it at all.
