i've seen and drove a gt tdi, the engine iLooks the exact same as mines down to every detail, but the golfs a s regi on a mk4, and mines is the old alh engine

but is it possible to take a 6 speed box from a golf gt tdi and swap it ? cause i would love a 6 speed box

The engine is probably not the same as a golf (assuming it's a mk4 golf), the engine was probably a PD rather than injection pump (unless you happen to have a ambiente SE, but I think that's 6 speed anyway)

There isn't much point in swapping for the 6 speed box as 6th is the same as 5th on the five speed, so you just end changing gear more often. Also the 6 speed wouldn't be a straight swap, you need the drive shafts and assorted other bits.

Are you sure about that? I'm (almost) certain that my 6-speed revs lower at say, 70, than my wife's 5-speed Ambiente 90bhp tdi?

well at 1800~1900 i'am doing 50mph so what would the 6'th gear speed ? i thought i might have been 60 ish, but i'll look into it more about the pd side of things

Her 2001 gt tdi PD AJM 115 remapped to around 145(bought new by me) does 80 MPH 2200 RPM in 6th and I think it would be difficult to get back the investment with improved MPG anytime soon unless you do lots of fast motorway driving.

Second gear tends to be very notchy from cold during winter, holding onto first gear for longer and a slow change to second for the first few changes helps this to an extent.

Imo 2200rpm @ 80 sounds great, i do sit at 80 on the motorway and well i do 700miles in a week sometimes, but it's not just that i want my car to be diferent, ie the 6'th gear, so all i have to do really is get a template made from an other gearbox and well match it up against it, and well if that fits then i'am basicly in luck

Dox, can you do me a favor, next time your out can you see what the car speed is when your doing roughly 1800~2000 rpm, i always sit at 50 on the motor way when i go eco mode

i know what you mean but i like being involved on a daily basis doing something mechanical, so if and when i done this i would be chuffed of that accomplishment. but it's more self satisfaction and knowing i'am probibly the only person thats done the above

thanks ron for showing me that, but it's only planing stages at the moment as money is tight.

Darkside developments do a 6 speed conversion kit complete. May be worth enquiring (I don't see it on their website though)

If I can bolt one up to a 20v I'm dam sure you can lob one on a tdi. The are a fair amount of little bits you will require though....

I really like my 6-speed box, but couldn't justify the initial outlay for what would be a very minor saving in the long run if I was contemplating a conversion.

My car does 35mph at 8,00rpm in 6th, I think 80 is about the 2,000 area...
