16396 + 17834 Fault Codes

Featured Replies

Ok firstly i would like to apologise for basically hijacking this whole forum over the past few days, but my car again today decided to throw its 3rd random wobbler in almost as many days, and frankly its cofusing me and starting to get on my nerves a little, but i do appreciate the help offered here on the forums and youve been a life saver with my car in the past and saved me alot of money.

Thing is this time .. the faults are different, its like my cars decided to troll me over the past week. like busses, you get none then loads come all at once.

Started car to come home from work, and engine management lights on, i diagnostic tooled it there and then,

16396 :- Camshaft A intake: advance setpoint not reached. Retarded

17834 :- EVAP purge valve (n80) open circuit: p1426

As the regular followers of my cars antics the first one is that retardent camshaft A thing i was on about a post or 2 ago.

and god knows what the second is? Purging? isnt that getting rid of excess gasses as in to purge something. Recirc valve? exhaust sensor?

Apologies and thanks again for any help,

The second one is the purge valve that is part of the charcoal canister near the washer bottle. Excess vapour from the fuel tank is stored in the canister and fed into the intake under ECU control. If you have ever noticed a ticking noise from that area, then that was the N80 valve. A faulty N80 valve is not an uncommon fault.

Wow, all my faults are linking up,

again regular followers of my troubles over the past day or so will know that i reported a horrible ticking noise coming from the box by the washer bottle with like intake vac pipes going in.

So which one egsactly is the N80?

and any views on this Camshaft thing ive been getting for the past god knows how long :)

Thanks Rwbaldwin

The ticking noise means the valve is working, I'd be more concerned if it wasn't ticking. The N80 is the solenoid on top of the charcoal canister with a multiplug going to it.

Not sure about the camshaft code. Possibly a faulty camshaft sensor? Or problem with the VVT adjuster

Erm.. around 6k ish,

Check the resistance first. If it's outside range then the adjuster is dead.

If it's not that, then check the oil screen at the adjuster. As Dox suggests, poor oil quality can cause problems, as the adjuster operates by oil pressure controlled by the solenoid. Changing the oil can sometimes flush the crud out of the oil screen but often it doesn't.
