Ordering a new car question

Featured Replies

Hi All,

When you order a brand new car from the dealer your paying almost £700 for the 'on the road price' items such as delivery, road tax etc.

If you already have a private number plate that is going onto the car from day 1, can any of this be saved?

nope and you will have to pay for the plate to be put on

:( as expected then!

Think if the dealer does the plate transfer it's £80 instead of you going to the DVLA and forking out £120

It's £80 or £105 to retain it for up to year before goin back on a car.

Yes. As you have said you already have a private plate and I am assuming you have already had this physical plate on

another vehicle belonging to you .

Therefore, as you already have the number plates, which were on a previous vehicle, you will be able to instruct the dealer

to fit these to your new car. I have done this on many occasions in spite of words to the contrary from the dealer that this can't be done.

Many dealers don't like doing this for obvious reasons, but then again you are not here to please the dealer.

Don't Octavia's have pre-prepared screw holes for the plates? If so I could see using old plates being a false economy if they have to drill new holes in your nice new boot lid.

I had a personal plate transferred from my previous car to the new one from Day 1, & it cost no more than if i had just picked the car up with an allocated DVLA number.

Previous poster is correct that you can take it off your current car as a retain & transfer it onto the new one when it arrives.

However doing this you have to get the V5 updated & a new Tax disc issued, then you can put your private plate on - You have paid £105 for this. PLUS you will still have paid the £80 1st registration fee & have a DVLA issued number ( which is generally re allocated to the car once you sell it)

If you get the dealer to do this you get the V5 tax disc & plates on from new & you have only paid the £80 1st reg fee, ( you should get new plates as well as this is what is quoted as part of the OTR price)
