H7 HID just for Hi beam?

As my car has a normal reflector set up for hi beam and the hi beam isn't subject to aim tests in the MOT, and legally you can fit pretty much anything in terms of auxilliary lighting as long as it extinguishes with your hi beam can you fit HIDs for hi beam only without any laws being broken?

Would be no point putting an HID kit in for Hi Beams as it takes time to "warm up" and the use of flashing would be gone :(. Depends really how much you use the full beam?

Yes, you can fit HID in the high-beam.

Using it myself and it's working fine!

No need to worry about flashing, since they work for flashing really well.

Usually, it takes 3-5 seconds to heat up to full effect.

For the flashing-part tho, they don't need to be fully heated since when they start, they do "flash" in the beginning by themself!

Im pretty sure that the lifespan would be reduced somewhat by 'flashing' power through the ballast though?

I dont flash people because its annoying.

I dont know on the legality, but if you use main beams properly, as in on B roads where there is no lighting etc it would probably be a smart move.

Although widely accepted, flashing is not a legally recognised form of communication whilst driving due to the risk of it being misinterpreted or taken as a signal to go by a driver for whom it is not intended.

IAM hat off now. Approximately 10 of my 15 mile commute is on unlit roads and half of that crappy B roads so I would certainly benefit from a better hi beam. In light of the impending more stringent MOT test where the threat is to fail cars with HIDs fitted in lights that are not designed for them due to the lack of washing and self levelling and more importantly the excessive light 'splashing' that causes dazzling on dipped beam, will this apply to hi beam?

I don't believe retro fitted HIDs in projector headlamps cause a problem because they rely on a mask rather than a reflector shape but I doubt that level of common sense will prevail.

High-beam is not covered in that aspect in MOT. It's regulated so that it's worknig, every high-beam is blinding and it's 100% legal to use HID in high-beam.

Perhaps in Sweden, but in the UK, as from January, you will be required to have washers and auto levelling for ANY HID's fitted to headlights.

These hid's although good for the owner not so clever for the on-coming traffic, I've had the xenon filled h7 ultra in mine they are fine for city driving were you will get plenty of light from other sources but here in rural Wales they are not so good, they are a good white colour with a slight Bly tint but don't throw enough light forward , so I've had 4 Philips extreme vision H7 100% brighter bulbs so these will be fitted soon, so if anyone is after bulbs and want them cheap please pm me ;) they are the ones on eBay for £15 a set I think so £ 20 for 4 bulbs, I've only used them twice for about 2hrs

Thanks Llanigraham. That is the answer I was looking for. (Not that it makes a lot of sense. Legislation over logic as usual). It looks like a pair of spotlights will have to be the answer
