Starting issue.

Featured Replies

1.9TDi octavia. 55 plate

Started the car up this morning to drop the kids off at school. Went on to the supermarket and parked up again for another 20 minutes or so. When I came out, there was no attempt by the car to turn over the starter motor, just a click from somewhere behind the dashboard. (The relay, I assume)

I checked fuses and such like before resorting to calling the RAC. Whilst waiting for the RAC I tried once again and the car started no problem.

Has anybody had a similar issue?

If so, what is the cause.

My initial feelings are a dodgy relay for the starter motor. Does anybody know where I can download a wiring diagram?

Off the wall suggestion, but my Dad has had something like this with his car - it makes no attempt to turn over whatsoever.

I recently took his car and had it for 2 days so it could get serviced. I had the spare key and never saw this happen... Got the car back to him and we were fiddling with a few things, he had his original key and it happened again.

He changed the battery in his first key fob and he says it's been fine since.

Not sure if that'll help you - but try the spare key before delving into wiring diagrams and getting your car apart... :)

(His car is an 05 plate..)

*Snip good advice*

Thanks for that. Will give it a go. Although I did have a worn out battery on my wife's octy, and didn't see any similar issues. Just not locking/unlocking.

I do have a spare battery though, so will give it a go to be on the safe side.

Cheers.

That must have been pure coincidence I'm afraid. The battery operated part of the fob is just for the central locking. The immobiliser chip is separate and doesn't need a battery in the fob in order to work.

So, anybody got a wiring diagram?

Has done it a couple of times now, and don't want to get stranded.

I can't find one anywhere online.

The best place for a full wiring diagram would probably to get a copy of Elsawin software. They often go cheap on ebay.
