Wheel refurbs.....which is better, paint or powder?

id say powder coated, i had mine powdercoated when i got my alloys

Depends on the quality of the person doing the wheels.......seen very good painting using high quality paints....also seen crap powder coating.........might as well ask "how longs a piece of string?"...!! :giggle:

i'd say paint ,having had a set powder coated , they were kerbed , then your stuck , if you paint em they're easier to sort mate

If they're stripped back first, I don't think it matters.

Fresh paint over old paint runs the risk of pealing if they've not been rubbed down tidy and all wheel polish removed.

Also new paint on old paint could react with each other. (Water based vs solvent based etc)

But if they're getting shot blasted first, none of this matters.

Powder coating will be more durable than paint and will stand less chance of it chipping, but paint may look better but not last as long.

As said all depends on who does it.

My reps are powder coated and seem to be good, but as previously mentioned if you get a chip pain in the ar5e the touch up......

My Avus wheels were painted, still look perfect and been on all year.

the local wheel refurber to me who apparently is supposed to be the dogs doodahs at refurbing says:

"All our work is done by hand and all finishes are in paint(unless polished), as per factory finish. In extreme cases we have bead blasting facilities which removes blistering paint and corrosion but doesn't damage the alloy like sand/grit blasting does. We are finding more and more cases of alloy wheels which have been sand blasted and powdercoated, but due to the 'quick-fix' nature of the process has a limited life and is not as durable as the powdercoaters are making out and the wheels corrode much faster than if they were done the A.P.S way. We do have some things powdercoated though, but we have scoured the country for the best in the business and in some special cases they do a chrome powdercoat for us which is used where a polished finish is desired for parts which cannot be polished."

the actual coating used on the wheels is not that important, they both have pros and cons, but the most important factor is the preperation, however you will have a wider choice of paint finishes using wet sprayed paint metallic/pearl etc... if you are getting them painted gold i reckon they would look kosher with a glitter coat in the first layer of laquer so they sparkle

These won't be gold - they are winter alloys, the fronts of which are fine, but the rears are bubbling and peeling

I'll probably end up taking them in just to have the backs done before the tyres go on

it may not be corrosion.. if they are bubbling up then they have probably been painted with water based paint as standard, sometimes the laquer reacts with the paint sealer they use on them and trapped water starts to expand... although if they are just winter wheels its probably not worth bothering to go to the expense of getting them painted, salty roads will ruin them anyway
