Audi S5 vs stage 1 TSI

No one was ever saying that a stage 1 vRS was in the same league as an S4/S5 or better, or that on the twisties it wouldn't get left behind. The point was about being it comparable (no one ever said it was quicker/better etc!) at straight line speed from a rolling start, which given similar power to weight rations isn't a surprise.

I'm glad someone can understand this simple concept! Blimey this is hard work and I have a 2 year old.

Interesting thread - a few mentions of the mighty GTR, epic car, but check out the tyre/brake/service costs - very scary

£1,400- for a set of four tyres - hmm that puts the Pilot sports on the vRS in perspective . . . I guess a set of pads would be similarly shocking

Apparently the service is £700 every 6 months

I have a 12 year old?

Seriously though, you asked what a stage 1 vRS v S5 was like.

I understand you were comparing a tuned car against a standard one, I do get it. However you have already got the bug to mod your cars, so it seems logical that you would do the same with any prospective purchase. This would therefore allow you to compare the potential of the engine of the S5.

As the post is so narrow in its subject field, I thought any views would be welcome as this seemed to be a real world comparison you could relate to.

Scary - yes!

Put off - no!!!!!!

Agree though, running costs in another league to regular cars. I guess thats the price of getting a car thats happy to run alongside most supercars.

Sorry, I was implying that I have to explain things numerous times to my 2 year old and it felt the same in this thread. I hope I have made myself clear now to the doubters and the people that made their point followed by 'sorry'.

I know what stage 1 vs S5 is like hence the post.

I probably wouldn't have tuned the S5 I drove as it was NA. The 3.0T I would tune but I wouldn't be able to buy this at a young age with a kid and mortgage. Couple of years maybe then yes the comparison is helpful. Guess I got lost their for a sec also

Just pondering on the parallel GT-R topic I found this. So the GT-R is epic but costs as much to run as a small fleet of Skodas but incredibly still not as much as a fully toaded Range Rover.

By comparison, and back on topic, the Audi S5 costs only 60% more to run than a vRS although seemingly doesn't deliver anything like 60% more happiness?

When you start to properly consider running costs like these, a lower level membership of one of the supercar clubs like F1 begins to appeal!

It almost does. It was truly a lovely car but just not quite enough for the cost. Perhaps RS4 but insurance was crazy when I checked

I sway from Golf R to S4 on a daily basis

The R would be cheaper to run I guess!

And when tuned would be quicker. S4 overall higher quality though.

Mm not so sure there. Doubt there would be anything in it.

Well having driven a GTR at speed on a drving day at Bruntingthorpe. It's an awesome machine. But it does not come alive until you are into 3 figure speeds. I had the same experience when buying my own skyline R33 , i bought the GTs-t instead of the GTR cost was one , but the main issue is again , they only come alive at higher speeds. So on the road you don't really get to enjoy the car. That's why i like the VRS it reminds me of my previous good handling cars, VW Corrado and Peugeot 309 gti etc ...not the fastest cars , but really enjoyable at normal speeds.

I think the VRs does surprise most people with it's pace. I love it , when they can't quite work out why they can't loose you ...ha ha ..it'd fun. Just be prepared for people not racing you in a GTR.

As regarding the Audi S5 , suspect a determined S5 driver will leave a stage 1 tuned VRs really easy. Thing i have notice of recent is that people with fast cars don't really push them anymore, could be just the cost of petrol restrains their right foot a bit.

Followed an s4 cab earlier, a v8 one, and it couldn't pull away and it was defo trying judging by the speed and the noise it made! I guess the cabs are heavier too.

That's interesting about the gtr. However, a 0-60 of 3 seconds seems pretty alive to me!

You suspect wrong about the S5 (well in a straight line) I put my foot down and it wasn't massively quick. However it felt very tight in the bends. I'm suprised the dealer allowed me to hammer it like I did. Guess he was wanting me to buy it once it seriously impressed me.

I'm looking into RS4's now or perhaps a tuned 335i or 335d. Thing is I don't want to spend more than 25k on a car.

Think it's just you and I that agree on this V8 vs stage 1 thing. I have come across an S4 in a race and driven both S4 and S5 none of which were able to pull away from the stage 1 TSI. I pulled away slowly from a 535d the other day but I have no idea if he was trying to his full. He certainly was trying though.

What i mean is it so smooth and rapid , it's too easy. Just hit the paddle shift , briefly see what gear your in and wow redline , same again and again , no drama what so ever. It's almost like playing a computer game the way it gains pace. There is no jerk from the transmission or anything just seamless acceleration.

You really need to treat yourself to a driving day and try one. I'm a fan, but like i said it only comes alive on a track day.

As regards the S5 not driven one , but know that the v8 needs revs to really perform , a strange nature for a v8 outside the Ferrari stable. :wonder:
