Check Engine light on

Featured Replies

This evening driving home from work (1 mile) noticed the check engine light on, the car drives fine and seems just the same as ever.

There was nothing displayed on the maxidot and the vehicle status option is also not present in the menus.

Got home, tried a couple of turn it off and on again but the light is still on.

As I dont have VCDS any clues.

As an additional note: the short runs mean that at the weekend my battery was almost flat having done a lot of short trips, so I took the car on a 20 mile run. This coming weekend I'll be travelling nearly 300 miles, and one day next week another 200 or so.

Hi,

It's impossible to say what has put your engine check light on, the only way is to connect the car to a fault code reader or vcds, you could look at the list of vcds owners and try contacting one of them, every one likes a few beer tokens.

Need someone with VCDS to check, but could be EGR related. Quite a few such posts lately across the board...

I had a similar problem last week, my check engine light came on in the morning on the way to work, was still on when i left work in the evening, but went off the next day, and not come on since!

I have since had the car checked and the fault code in the log was for "Fuel Quality Sensor", the mechanic suggested I may have had some bad fuel!

That's interesting, I filled up with a fresh tank on Saturday, from almost empty. I have used the garage in the past with no problem. I'll keep an eye and see how it goes.

A battery with insufficient charge will throw codes in various control units. On your drive home did you have a lot of electrical consumers on?

Yes, as it was dark the headlights were on and the heating of course. No radio, no point on such short trips.

Quick update, light is still on after 200 mile drive, however I now know what the symptoms are. When the engine is at normal operating temp it's very difficult to start and you need to leave the car for around 5mins before it will start again.

Mpg seems improved, managed 53mpg instead of usual 46 on the drive to Cambridge.

It's not the battery.I had this problem and the car threw fault codes in modules 09 and 01-Engine(but without any MIL).Also I got an error on the Columbus screen after I entered the car saying that I must start the engine or the navigation will close.

I'll hopefully be getting the car scanned tomorrow by my friendly garage in Stevenage, although they will not be able to get any part required tomorrow at least I'll know whats up. If the local Skoda dealer has whatever is needed in stock, I'll pop over and collect one and fit myself before driving back down to Dorset tomorrow evening.

The verdict is in.

Visited my local garage, who plugged in the fault code reader and I have 2 faults showing.

Camshaft Position Sensor implausible signal - Intermittent,

and

Exhaust Pressure Sensor signal to high.

There is no issue with the DPF at all, so one of these is causing the CEL. They did not want to commit to sorting it at such short notice as they are not sure they would be able to get the part needed today because I need to get back to Dorset this evening. Although at the end of the day they both need fixing.

So roughly how much will it cost I wonder to replace both sensors including labour.
