Hello.

I am new to this forum and new to Skoda ( although I have always drove VW`s ).

I have just brought a cheap run around for the wife which has 135k on the clock, its turns over sweetly ( the starter motor is a bit noisy )and idles beautifully.

It has no history but the owners tells me he did all the work himself, I know its a silly question now I`ve brought it but have I made a mistake !?!

Absolutely not, the majority of problems that 1.4 16v owners (such as me) have stems from having bought LOW mileage cars which have led too quiet a life. Keep on top of the servicing and keep driving it and it'll be fine. If your wife is only going to drive it half a mile to the shops and back every day then ANY car is going to give you problems under those circumstances and this one won't be any different.
