not being in the no about engines ,is my oil cap ment to smell of petrol ?

i undone the oil cap to have a look about and it smells of petrol is this bad or is it normal please can i have some advice :confused:

Yes its kinda normal, especially if you do mainly short journeys as you tend to get a bit of whats known as 'bore washing'. Excess fuel builds up in the cylinders and creeps down past the piston rings and contaminates the engine oil. In little amounts its not too much of a problem, but it can lead to low compressions and possible emission faults.

Best get the coolant temp sensor looked at just to be on the safe side and if it needs an oil and filter change do it.
