Dashboard lights

Hi does anyone know how to switch off the illumination of the dashboard guage needles on a Fabia, at the moment the needles light up as soon as the ignition is switched on but the guages remain dark making it difficult to read your speed at a glance on a dull day, I would like to get the dashboard to either light up completely or stay dark until the lights are on. Alternatively can the side lights be activated by the ignition which would of course illuminate the dash anyway? Thanks
