How to raise revs enough to get reading for MOT?

Featured Replies

Hi

I have the 1.6 CR TDi and because its a taxi it has to have a MOT every year even though its not 3 years old. Last year I was stuck at the taxi test station for an hour trying to get a reading from his machine for the emitions but struggled as the revs will not raise high enough when not moving. This years test is on Tuesday and don't want to be stuck there for hours this time, Is there a way to raise the revs while stationary?

Kind Regards

Kyle

Smoke test you mean?

He could put it on the rolling road and measure the readings but it should technically be a fast idle. Does it not rev on the 1.6 then as my 2.0 goes to the redline in neutral.

Only 2500 revs, I'm sure if its at the dealers they would be able to do something to allow higher revs...

I don't know if this has come into force yet, or whether it will apply to taxi tests, but the 2012 MOT testers manual says it is no longer absolutely necessary to get a diesel to register on the smoke meter:

Some low emission diesel engines (mainly Euro IV) and those which will not reach maximum revs (due to design features) may fail to trigger a reading due to the very low levels of smoke produced.

If the DSM does not register a reading or shows an error, the printout should be marked accordingly showing that the emissions limits were tested and met but the DSM could not register the reading.

If the DSM will not produce a printout then the tester must make a written note of the following: -

Test Station number

Testers name

Date & time

Test number

Vehicle Type

Vehicle VRN

That the vehicle passed the emissions test

No print out was produced due to low emissions.

This information must be recorded and kept with the emissions records for audit purposes for 3 months

Usually de activating the ESP or ASR allows you to rev the engine up.

my car will not rev above 3000rpm when not moving. 2008 2.0td vrs.

Mine was bypassed for this very reason - a CR TDi and they gave me an MOT anyway.

I have the 1.6 CR and I would call dumb to the guy whos performing the test.

Testing must meet today cars, the revs only go 2500 rpm they will have to make adjustments to their machines to accept the rpm values.

Turbo motors aren´t ment to be reved when engine not in load, meaning idling, reving only when in movement.

Here the test in portugal they give an aceleration to the engine to at least 2500rpm, diesel engines.

Here we also have the goverment reclamation book. This would go to the book and autorized to drive until response to reclamation.

VW models also do this, your not the only one.

It seems hard to believe that you would be the only one to have this problem. Indeed, the 1.6 CR does not pass 2500revs when not driving. Every VW (and there will be quiet a lot of them by now) with the same engine would have the same problem with the MOT. And modifying whatever to the engine or the management of the engine seems a bad idea to me...

indeed, the test centers need to change their procedures, they MUST accept type approved cars, end of. dont modify your car.... call them first and explain you dont want to be waiting, explain that thhey must be able to MOT test type approved cars, and if they cant they are not doing their job properly, and ask who you can complain to.

The answer at last, after taking some tips and trying combinations from this thread.

To raise the revs higher than 2500 you have to turn ASR off AND push your clutch in and it will red line rev. Just turning ASR off isn't enough!

Thanks guys

Kyle

When I had my MOT done at a Halfords test centre they actually ran the car on a Rollers set up for the smoke test - the rollers were also used to test the brakes.

They also used a temperature probe down the oil dip stick hole to ensure the engine was at the right temperature for the smoke test, never come across that before

I've seen that done on my Fabia vRS, the oil temp should be around the 80C mark ideally, though it was only just above 60c when mine was done, this is to ensure that the engine is hot enough. That is why it is a good idea to go for a long drive and give the engine a good workout before heading to the test centre so any soot is blown out of the system before you get there and you get a good result.
