Rally Bulbs 160/100

Featured Replies

I hate the lights in the car and years ago I had rally bulbs on an other car and they worked well but burned out the light switch. Think I had 160 / 100 but it was a while ago.

If I put a bulb like this on the car will it blow the switch? Or do I need to rewire and have the feed comming direct from the battery with a switch relay?

Its a better option than HID which don't seem to like the Octo lamps

You'd burn out the electrics and also melt the head lights using those bulbs, plus they are illegal to use on the road hence they say for off road use only

Regulations might be different in the ROI where CountryBoy is though (IIRC?)

I've come across Octavias with 100/80s. The lenses were glass, so there is no chance of melting.

The way this is done for rally purposes is to mount a relay immediately behind the headlight. The cable from the headlight switch controls the relay. The relay is fed via a fuse from the battery using thicker wire. Usually, the bulb socket and attached wire is also replaced to prevent it melting.

These are illegal and VOSA/Police do stop and check. A couple of months ago, I was stopped in a place called Cowbit (between Peterborough and Spalding). I had no problem as I had Philips Extremes in, but loads of drivers were getting done.

Just out of interest, do they check main beam as well? I've wondered if I might get a ahem, brighter bulb for main beam as it's a separate bulb on mine and main beam is only on when there's no one to dazzle.

Yes, they did. They checked the alignment too.

I had a chat to one of the coppers whilst they were checking my headlights. Using rally bulbs is more of a problem than HIDs out there. Narrow twisty roads, deep ditches and dazzling lights don't mix. Apparently, there have been a few cars go off the road after the drivers were 'blinded'.

Pre facelift octys were glass facelift ones are plastic think the shape of the pre facelift ones were different and won't fit?

Can't see what car he has due to using tapatalk

I don't think the glass ones will be any good either. even though the lens is glass, the rest of the light and the reflector is plastic, and if it melts/distorts, the beam pattern would be all over the shop.

Pre facelift lights are different too.

Are they the 160/100. If so ill get a set today

You just put them in with out any additional wiring?

I see halfords have a set of 130/90 which they claim are ok for plastic headlights (UV cut!!!)

No alterations at all.

I certainly don't pay £10 a bulb though like those Halfords ones!!

I get mine from PartCo. on trade discount for a lot less!!

I also use 100w H3 fog light bulbs..... Guess what, they're ilegal too!!

I use to use the higher power bulbs mate and had no issues emoticon-0143-smirk.gif now im a HID kit ****bag but hey ho i can see where im going emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

I may even be speeding at times you'll never know emoticon-0105-wink.gif

So many people - so many fractured laws emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif

Makes me wonder how many laws are broken by just briskodians alone everyday emoticon-0104-surprised.gif

I had some 100/90W (H4) bulbs in my Suzuki for a while. They eventually fried the fuse box, causing the headlights to randomly turn on and off when they were on! Which was fun at night.

Ended up having to replace the fuse box. The lamps were glass, so never experienced any problems there.

I'm running 60/55W Philips X-treme Vision H4's (100% more light), and 55W Philips Blue Vision Ultra H3's in the Skoda. It's a pretty epic combo. Ideal for all the pitch black country lane hacking I do.

If you need more light than that, then you should probably get your eyes checked, or start eating more carrots!

One thing to note is that keeping your headlamps clean in the winter is critical. The Octavia lamps seem to be a dirt magnet!

Had the X-treme vision but they didnt last the year.

So guess ill put in the rally bulbs. Will do a but of extra wiring as a good feed from the battery can only help.

Had an Opel Nova (First car stop laughin) and they did fry the light switch so was a bit cautious putting them in the Skud.

And yeah the lights are a super dirt magnet .
