Oil Update

Featured Replies

Hi guys you may remember I chopped in my ordered vRS as it was taking way too long for a Polo Gti (Judas I know  ) Well I have a further update with my Polo Gti, now my Polo does use oil but I would say its within tolerances and hasn't used more than the 1,000miles per 1 litre as the book states, last week I took it into the dealers to get a stamp in the book for a service it had when I bought it which they forgot to add, the service lady asked if I had any problems, I stated its used a bit of oil but no more than the book says 1litre per 1000 miles she says she'll get an engineer to have a look, 10 mins later comes back out and says it needs a full rebuild with pistons's, piston ring's, cylinder head etc

To say I was shocked was an under statement! No fuss no oil evaluation, just spoke to the guy in the garage and it has a list of new parts to be fitted

It was a real surprise to me as they just took my word for it (other than having to top my car up with oil)

They did say there is a "bulletin" from VW about this engine and its high oil consumption so as previously stated on this forum VAG Group are aware of issues, unfortunately I didn't get to see this bulletin but did get a glimpse of the parts list required and it was fairly substantial.

I have heard a rumour that (for the Polo Gti anyway) that it you buy a new one now they come with a revised bottom end to stop the high consumption? I douby though whether this will solve the misfire issues people are having?

wow... din't they examine it? no list of compression in the cylinders? are you sure they dont just want the warrenty work?

Nope nothing.... No major tests just that they want it in! Maybe they do want the work but I'm not overly fussed as I benefit in the long run!

I have to say this isn't something I went in complaining about I just happened to mention it so they may be a very by the book dealership?

Lol, people with similar problems in their vRS are beggin' the dealer to do a replacement and this guy at VW just offered this by himself??? This will make some Skoda owners mad I think!

Me with a vrs and my mate with a polo gti which had 7000miles when he bought it have both experianced this, my mate had the pistons and rings (which are a modified version of the origionals) and iv had a new engine at 2000miles, so far so good and using around 200ml oil per 600miles, as before i was using 1l to 500miles roughly.

(14tsi VRS) Was using round about 1LT every 500 miles, kept being told it should settle after 5k couldn't take the chance and got rid of it, we still have our fabia 2008 12 12v sport now coming up to 4 years old never used a drop of oil.

Stu, yes it happens. They are obviously aware of the engines numbers affected and yours will have been flagged as an engine susceptible to problems due to a build/engineering problem at the factory or the need for immediate mods. The tech may well have just checked his docs against a printout to identify your car as one in need. They only need your name if you bought it from them. Good luck with that and don't let it put you off your car. The Polo is a pretty good car.

well mine is a 60 plate, so an early one, and mine is fine..... 250 mill of oil in the last 10k, and thats just because i am anal, it would have been well withing the min-max limit without me touching it between the first and second service...

maybe its because how it was run in, but my engine is good... cant understand why some would fail, unless there is a parts issue in the manufacturing process.....

Yeah...Mr Rider, it's a manufacturing problem. Some tolerances in some engines were wrong, concerning in many the crankshaft, cylinders and pistons, along with other problems identified. I don't know all the issues but VW told me of the issues some time ago, these are not new problems. My nephew has a 1.4TSI awaiting all these parts too. Pistons rattle like a good un due to tolerance problems and it smokes. He's a fully qualified tech and he is going to get shot of it once it's rebuilt as he reckons they are a liability. I would point out his is a Golf not a Skoda.

I think there a fantastic piece of kit and all in all its a great engine, very quick and also fuel efficient, but they do seem to have these fundamental design flaws I certainly won't be getting rid of mine when its repaired

Which inevitably has me thinking about long term commitment with my car... I really love it and didn't have an oil issues so far, but is that something that can be excluded for the future due to it not happening in the first 10K klm or can it appear at any time? I bought the car with a prolonged guarantee of 5 years which is pretty reassuring, but what about after that? Sometimes I think of selling before the guarantee expires even If I won't have any problems with it, and some other times, especially after a nice quick drive, I want to stick with it for as long as I can...

it's a car i would only even own within warranty. the cost of replacing turbos, pistons, chargers etc etc is all too high to consider ownership out of warranty

I have been well known to be a little negetive towards the new 1.4 VRS ;) , I was just thinking to my self after reading these few posts " are the birds coming home to roost" ??

doubt it seb, google any car and i bet you can find serious issues with it but what you never really see is how many good uns there are to bad uns. chances are people only post the bad and it clouds people opinions somewhat

in fact anything you buy these days will have somebody somewhere with an issue.

so as much as i think your a jonah i doubt you saw this coming :giggle:

glasses anyone B) ???
