Castrol Edge for topping up

Featured Replies

Today in Wilkinson 1 litre of Castrol Edge both 5w30 to VW 504 00 and 507 00 specification and 5w40 to VW 502 00 and 505 00 specification was £8.99 a litre.

Halfrauds charge £16.49 a litre .....

That's cheap - Sainsbury's with 25% off are charging 14 quid at the moment.

What are people's thoughts on mixing different brands of the correct specification oil e.g. fully synthetic 5w40 to VW 502.00, together in the same engine?

unless you see it poured in then how would you know what brand it is? my thought is so long as its the EXACT same spec then why not, although i have been known to be wrong

I hope there is no issues as mine had whatever it was filled up with, then a litre of Edge and now a litre of Quantum...

I hit the 4k mark the other day and decided to top up with Castrol Edge - 5w-40 502.00 - £12 from ASDA.

Freakishly, when I got back in the car with my shopping the oil light came on! - as if it knew. All running smooth now though.

Can't beat asda!

I cant belive you have gone to halford's before popping into your local skoda dealer and getting a quote we do the one liter top up's of that oil for £13.10! and i would be more then happy to sell it you a £10.70 if your a briskoda member :) FURROWS SKODA SHREWSBURY kieran :D

ok Kie, earn your bread here. can we mix makes of oil so long as there all the same specification?

for example, i received a bottle of castrol foc in my new vrs. all in a little bag with wipes and funnel. is this what comes in a new vrs?

you may be quoted forever more on this so be sure before you answer ;)

I spent £12000 on a 1l bottle of Edge! :(

But i did get a free car

Oil changes I would be doing myself and therefore I could guarantee the brands.

ok you and a few others aside, what about us simpletons

As you say, as long as the specification matches exactly then the brand itself should not be an issue.

The spec in the handbook for the mk2 vRS is 502 00 which equates to Castrol Edge 5w40 but supplied with the car was Castrol Edge Professional Longlife which is 5w30 and equates I think to 504 00. I remember reading somewhere on this forum that VAG or Skoda at least were going fully over to 504 00 in the garages, which is specified for the longlife servicing. I am all for using the best quality oil but going to 504 00 does seem rather excessive.

Even from work rather than home a round trip to my dealer is 15 miles and well over 30 minutes time even if very slick service at the parts counter. Hence it would not be worthwhile for a litre of oil.

I wasn't specifically shopping for oil but just happened to be in Wilkinson and saw the offer so grabbed a bottle while I was there.

As to Halfrauds I just looked up the price on website before I made the post on here ....

just because it's a long life oil, doesn't mean it's a better quality of oil..there are some instances where using 502.00 is better for the engine eg if the car is used for a lot of track days, or for lots of short journeys :)

I personally couldn’t see why not, but if I were to answer that professionally I would say not, only because these oil companies will not tell you exactly what they put in there oil's for example different fuel's they can be the same spec (RON) but the additives they put in the fuels are different as you know but what additives they are exactly the fuel companies will be a bit shady on giving that info out as a rival could create exactly the same fuel... same with oil Castrol spend millions researching and developing oils these are then tested by car manufacturers i.e. Skoda in different conditions and different driving style's when happy with a particular blend they will close a deal. now obviously the spec of the oil will be printed on the back of the container to ensure you’re getting the correct spec for your engine, but how well the oil performs is really down to how well the oil has been made with what quality additives have been added and it’s this info which they will not print on their bottles for rivals to read..

Hope this helps :)

As a Skoda representative I would recommend Castrol SLX Professional Powerflow, Use it in my own Fabia VRS mk2. And I find it great with fuel economy and it takes a lot of stick before it burns, But hey who am I to say what oil to use :)

This thread reminds me of the supermarket v non supermarket fuel.

Provided the oil is bought from a reputable outlet and it meets the spec for my car (507 00) I am not concerned about name.

It is one product I would not buy from an online aution type website.
