locking the keys in

Featured Replies

does anyone know if it is possible to get the locks reprogrammed so that in the winter months i can start my engine and then lock the keys in with the spare set as to let the car defrost whilst i eat breakfast, lazy i know, but early mornings are nasty, especially when i get to work with wet cold feet!!!...

thanks

I don't know if it's possible, but it's illegal to leave a vehicle unattended with the engine running anyway. Also, even if the doors are locked, you may find that your insurance won't cover you against theft of the vehicle.

I know it's possible to autolock ur keys in the boot...thank christ i was at home! :wonder:

can you just use the key to lock the doors rather than the key fob

Not really a good idea zach. I note you have a TDI and as such it will not warm up the engine by letting it idle, therefore negating your attempts to defrost. Although the back window can defrost using the rear windscreen heater as can the heated mirrors. Even if you let it idle for 30 mins it will barely get the coolant above freezing as diesels don't warm up until they are put under load. It will also cause oil rise over a period of time with diesel getting into the engine oil in large amounts. The same happens on petrol cars but the petrol evaporates much more easily than diesel from engine oil. On top of that your DPF won't like it much either and it's a big waste of fuel. Overall, very bad for your car...petrol or diesel! Errr...sorry to rain on your aspirations.

Just use the spare key to lock it using the key in the door method

You were lucky I was at ikea!

I don't understand wanting it to warm up at idle. Much more efficient for it to warm up whilst being driven. Just ensure all glass clear and should be no worries.

You can now buy a car heater that plugs into your 12v socket. Plug in turn on have breakfast defrosted nice and warm. Online amaz £13 ish

It's hard to clear all glass and de mist the inside without putting the engine on warming it up an putting the heaters on. And after last winter you could clear then drive off an they would freeze again it's was that cold

Much better this way, anyway. You will warm up the gearbox properly too, not just the engine!

i was gonna add, getting the car nicked or breaking the law being on the road with the engine running and no-one in it was ok as you had it in your attached, locked up garage! HA! HA! COUGH,CHOKE! Why has my face gone like a blueberry?

Other posters have said everything that needs to be said on this subject, but my point is that surely this is not illegal if done from the comfort of your own drive?
