Roomster 1.4 diesel vs. petrol?

Featured Replies

Hi,

The eternal debate...

I drive 200-250 miles/week. Choice of second-hand 1.4 TDi (not sure if 70 or 80 hp) or 1.4 petrol 85 hp. The TDI has a towbar which might indicate heavy use...

There's also a 1.9 TDi in the same price range, but is it a good move tax-wise?

Which do you reckon will be cheaper to run?

Cheers!

Have you had a look at this site: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/RealMpg/Results?manufacturer=skoda ?

The posting for the 1.9tdi are a good match to those I have experienced. I have no reason to believe that the figures for the 1.4Tdi and the 1.4 16v are not then genuine. If that is accepted as the case then using local fuel costs £1.399 for diesel and £1.309 for petrol you should save about £8/9.00 or so a month using diesel.

Whether you match the HJ website fuel consumption figures depends on your driving style. Further, the cost of diesel seems to rise above inflation and common sense on a regular basis. What the future holds depends on the level of acceptable profiteering by the fuel producers.

A simple double check on road tax, insurance, tyres, servicing, etc set side by side for each vehicle will also give a good guide.

Hope the above helps gather your thoughts.

Salut, Thanks for the link and pointers!

I have the 1.4TDI (80), I done a calcualtion on my mpg over a month period. Although the car said I had done an ave of about 51mpg, my calculations worked it out closer to 44/45mpg
